Concerns ... the ancestry tests that are now commonly sold online, a trend which feeds the notion that one’s ethnic heritage may indicate the state of one’s health.

New forms of discrimination, known as "neoracism", are taking hold in scientific research, spreading the belief that races exist and are different in terms of biology, behaviour and culture, according to anthropologists who spoke at the annual American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Chicago.
This comes despite decades-long efforts to reverse attitudes that were used to justify the slave trade and the Nazi ideology.
"Genome science can help us a lot in the individualisation of medical practice," said Nina Jablonski, an anthropology professor at The Pennsylvania State University.
But she warned that science could be "misused" to propagate the belief that people inherently have different abilities based on skin colour or ethnic background.

She cited new research urging that children be identified based on their genetically predetermined educational abilities and then put in separate schools that could be used to foster different kinds of learning.
what the hell research is this?
That article seems rather bias, I mean I click on it and straight away I see Hitler
Those damn recessives!
spreading the belief that races exist and are different in terms of biology
Is this article implying that races do not exist and that those non-existent races are not different in biology?
Apparently a black skin is biologically the same as a white skin. By this logic I'm going blind.
I fear I cannot read the article any further, for I cannot distinguish the black text from the white background. (I did read the article)
edit:
Science in itself does not decide morality. When science finds the following:
Published research has shown that blacks are more likely than whites to have a blood type that causes sickle cell disease and can protect against malaria, and are more likely to have a certain gene called APOL1, which protects against a parasite that causes sleeping sickness.
It does not mean to say that African American is a superior race. What is implied by the evidence is shown in the abstract of the article that provides this evidence.

congratulations you can now consider yourself stupid !

You took everything from me before I was even born!
Well that's a new world record for
It's weird thinking. some Gattaca shit.
what the hell research is this?
Reminds me of that one movie where Genetically modified children had a specific purpose, while regular children became janitors.
what the hell research is this?
The Gattaca kind

I like how it says:
spreading the belief that races exist

Many distinguished scientists in the United States recognise that race itself is not a biological variable, but they still buy into the notion that shared ancestry can impart certain biological characteristics
Worded to basically say "Imagine that people STILL think there are races and differences between them!", then in the next paragraph:
Published research has shown that blacks are more likely than whites to have a blood type that causes sickle cell disease and can protect against malaria, and are more likely to have a certain gene called APOL1, which protects against a parasite that causes sleeping sickness.
It pretty much states that differences are facts.
These people are anti-scientific and on par with rabid creationists that send their children to re-education camps. They'd censor science that hurts their feelings if they could.
Races and biological differences exist, what conclusions you draw from them is one thing, but they exist. Anyone who wants to stop scientific research because some people draw a certain conclusion from it is worse than the aforementioned people.

Ore like that star trek episode where a childs life, occupation, and future partner were all carefully planned out before the child was genetically engineered to like all of those.

That explains it.
Sure, there are minor genetic differences between ethnic groups. But in the end we are all human.
There is no point in accusing a certian group for having inferior genes. Because in reality the whole of humanity is a bit of a genetic mess. Genetic perfection aka ze ubermench is nowhere to be found.
Unless you're wearing this suit of course...

Duh, I don't think any real scientists are saying that. However, to pretend that there is no difference between any race and that they are entirely a social construct is stupid.
Gattaca tomorrow, guys. Some random person said so.
I won't be surprised honestly... we been racist ever since we meet the blacks, discriminate over religion and/or race long time ago, I won't be surprised if we meet our first galactic aliens, and we highly discriminate them for not being a human... which is kinda stupid but stupidity is widespread among ordinary citizens, and it be a battle or more to fight for equality.
Those damn recessives!
Aren't recessive genes... like... not particurally worse then dominant ones? I mean, I always thought that it's just that one were less likely to "activate" then another, but it's not like in MGS right?
People need to realize the differences between race and ethnicity. Race is a completely social construct and different groups and identities can change races over time. Ethnicities are biological groups that happen to share certain traits. Scandinavians are more likely to have blond hair and certain west African groups have a higher prevalence of sickle-cell disease.

Nope.
Ethnicity or ethnic group is a social group of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural, or national experience.
Basically they're all really fluidly defined, but I've always taken race to be the one that at least has some biological component, such as skin color.

Yeah, but the joke is that the people in MGS don't seem to know that.
But genetically we are different. Pretending races are the same and no different from one another is just as ignorant as hurtful racism. Ever wonder why since the early 80's the winner of the 100m at the World Athletics Championship has been a black guy? Except once? Genetics and DNA is why. It's not a bad thing, it's just the human race

Everyone in MGS has a hard time with genetics but has a brilliant understanding of nanomachines sonehow
No you guys, I totally didn't write all about this in the Genetic Engineering thread at all! Totally didn't call it.
Asians are almost all lactose intolerant, Inuit are extremely prone to diabetes, Africans have a high prevalence of sickle cell disease. There is nothing racist about these things, races have certain genetic differences from emerging in certain regions. It only becomes racist if you are idiotic enough to discriminate because of these things.
