A scene like this can probably be witnessed in most large cities around the world. What is unusual about the situation in Germany is that prostitution here has been legal since the Social Democrat (SPD)-Green coalition government changed the law in 2002.
The aim of that change was, as the SPD politician Anni Brandt-Elsweiler put it at the time, "to improve the situation of prostitutes by giving more power back into their own hands, by strengthening their self-confidence and their legal position when dealing with clients and pimps".
In Berlin, political support for the pioneering law change is still strong. Earlier this year SPD and Green city councillors compiled a little booklet that they distributed among Kurfürstenstrasse residents, pleading for more tolerance and understanding towards the sex trade in their midst. "City life and prostitution have gone hand in hand for more than 100 years," it said. "Prostitution is not illegal."

Alexa Müller, 38, is one of the sex workers who passionately defend Germany's unique path on prostitution law. "Women can run brothels responsibly here and not be prosecuted, that's an incredible achievement. And sex workers are autonomous legal agents. They can take a client to court if he refuses to pay up," she said.
She accused Schwarzer of spreading ignorance and churning out misleading figures. Criminalising the clients of sex workers, as it is done in Sweden, she says, would only cement their victim status. "We are not victims, we are adventurous sex goddesses!" she said.

I know it's not the main issue but it annoys me that prostitution is always framed as a gendered debate. What about male prostitutes? They would be banned as well and I don't think paying to have sex with males is detrimental to women's emancipation.
all banning prostitution ever accomplishes is making the black market (illegal sex trade) more profitable for those that would seek to exploit vulnerable women.

Exactly, prostitution will always go on so surely it would be better if it was open and regulated rather than being controlled by criminals.
Legalizing prostitution was done to help the prostitutes by giving them legal protection when doing their jobs. If they make it illegal, they won't have that protection anymore. Plus, don't feminists believe that women should be in charge of their bodies, and the institution shouldn't stop them? This movement to ban prostitution seems counteractive to that ideology.
So they want to fight for their right to not have rights? Huh?
I hate how 'feminists' try to regulate and make laws concerning what women are allowed to do because if they choose to do it its obviously them being forced into it by sexists.
Also the fact that freeing females from inequality is not what feminism means. Its equality of the sexes, not "MEN ARE HORRIBLE SEXIST PIGS, WOMEN RISE UP."
Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal?
Give women power by taking it away?
They're putting women that do this at risk if it goes illegal. If they have to do this due to financial issues making it illegal won't stop them from doing it and only puts them in danger.
But it's okay as long as it makes these dumbshits feel good about themselves.
Yeah! Prevent them from making a little extra cash on the side by letting a dude bang them!
isn't this basically just, y'know, taking away things that women are able to do
Prostitution is a pretty depressing industry but illegalizing it would probably put a lot of women in danger.
Wouldn't they want to legalize it?
Prostitution isn't their enemy. I don't even understand why its illegal.

Selling is legal. Fucking is legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal?

Explained in a way even a moron can understand.
Except rabid militant feminists are dumber than that.
Feminism is known for its hypocrisy. No surprises here.
Regulation not illegalisation
And ban was boobies.
Wouldn't they want to legalize it?

They probably believe that all women involved in the sex industry are pushed into it or want to get out.
They probably believe that all women involved in the sex industry are pushed into it or want to get out.
And they also like to pretend male prostitutes don't exist.
Feminism is known for its hypocrisy. No surprises here.
And in a single clean stroke, was the entirety of feminism dismantled, on account of perceived hypocrisy.
Do they know by banning prostitution, it would put lots of people out of jobs?
Uh...aren't feminists pro prostitution? Or at least supposed to be?
This woman is clearly an idiot.
Uh...aren't feminists pro prostitution? Or at least supposed to be?
It depends on which one you ask. As surprising as it may seem, feminists come from all walks of life and hold different ideologies, some very reasonable, and some on other planes of reality.
Uh...aren't feminists pro prostitution? Or at least supposed to be?
Feminism isn't a unified ideology.
When's feminism actually going to do something in ways of equality? Saaaaay~? make military requirements for both sexes the exact same? That'd be a pretty large step in ways of equality in the sexes.
Feminists oppressing other women? that's a new one
Uh...aren't feminists pro prostitution? Or at least supposed to be?
feminism isn't an organisation

yeah after thinking about it this was a dumb thing to ask.
Advocate femenism, but want to take away the freedom of a woman to do what she wants to do with her body. A+ logic
A better way to go about this wouldn't be to ban it entirely, but make sure those who are sex workers have protection, are in safe environments, etc.
Instead of fighting to ban something that a lot of people rely on, fight so they are able to do it in a safe and empowering way.
