While cool and a good demo of augmented reality tech, it seems quite counter-intuitive to have to see stuff through a screen instead of simply in "real life".

Probably neither. Since, you know, one is a pair of glasses with a camera on it and the other is a big clunky (but cool) VR gaming headset.

Consumer version of Oculus Rift will have two cameras on the front and will be wireless, so it might work.
It'll still be clunky though.
