Scientists have discovered how allergic reactions to cats are triggered, raising hopes of preventative medicine. A University of Cambridge team has identified how the body's immune system detects cat allergen, leading to symptoms such as coughing and sneezing. New treatments to block this pathway raise hopes of developing medicines to protect sufferers, they say. Allergy UK says the research is "a big step forward" in understanding how cat allergen causes allergic reactions.
Article (BBC)
wow, the scientists are really at it recently.
did they really need the university of cambridge to do this? the cause of cat allergy is cats duh
I had an allergy to cats as a kid. I grew up having two cats though and now I've outgrown the allergy.
fucking good. can't wait to not be allergic to those fuckers in like 20 years
as I am really allergic to pretty much all house pets and deadly allergic to a lot of food, I can't get happy enough when stuff like this come up. I want a cat :(
I've lived around cats for years; never had any allergic reactions to them. Feather pillows yes, but not cat hair.
As someone who is deathly allergic to cats, this news pleases me greatly.
I had an allergy to cats as a kid. I grew up having two cats though and now I've outgrown the allergy.
I had no allergies to cats as a kid. I grew up having two cats though and now I'm really allergic to cats.
I love my cat and feel sorry for those who can't own one due to allergies
What about dogs now?
I own two cats despite my allergies, I can't have them in my face or cuddle too extensively with them, but otherwise it's working out. I would definitely love better ways to prevent it though
I own two cats despite my allergies, I can't have them in my face or cuddle too extensively with them,
I do it anyway and suffer the consequences
Oh god yes I always wanted a cat but they are practically deathwish for me. Just like pollen and moldy places. I wish there was a decent way of getting rid of allergies without fucking yourself over in other way.
What about dogs now?
yes this i'm not alergic to cats but i am alergic to dogs and i want a doggy :(
I'm technically allergic to cats. Doesn't stop my grandma from owning 12 cats in the same house as me.
My father and I are both allergic to cats. Still own cats because it only effects us when they claw up our arms and have their hair touch the open wounds.
I am allergic to weeds
I had an allergy to cats as a kid. I grew up having two cats though and now I've outgrown the allergy.
Would this work with bee stings? Could I just sting myself regularly and become immune?
When I read the title, i thought that the scientists had cured allergies for cats, like, a cure for pollen allergies for a cat. I wouldn't be surprised if they did invent a cure for allergies for cats, one of my cats is allergic to lamb and peas.
Oh my god, this is great I've always wanted a cat, maybe soon I can finally have one
Glad i'm not allergic. I have a small kitten, and currently she is curled up in a ball against my chest.
my understanding is everyone has some level of allergy to them, the sneezing and congestion just being worse cases - also why cat scratches are itchy etc
Now maybe they can make my sister not allergic so my parents will buy us a fucking cat. My dog is an asshole.
(and that given enough chilling with cats, you can get over it well enough)
(and that given enough chilling with cats, you can get over it well enough)
bad idea if you also had/have asthma (like i did) it was a fun trip to the hospital tho
I can't imagine being allergic to cats I fucking love my two cats [editline]25th July 2013[/editline] They're both shitheads though
My one eyed cat's ass smells bad lately.
My one eyed cat's ass smells bad lately.
Are you sure you're smelling the right eye
