Leaked transcripts of a closed-door meeting between Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan shed an extraordinary light on the hard-nosed Realpolitik of the two sides.
Prince Bandar, head of Saudi intelligence, allegedly confronted the Kremlin with a mix of inducements and threats in a bid to break the deadlock over Syria.
Bandar discussed the Syrian issue at length. He explained how the kingdom’s position had evolved on the Syrian crisis since the Daraa incident all the way to what is happening today. He said, “The Syrian regime is finished as far as we and the majority of the Syrian people are concerned. [The Syrian people] will not allow President Bashar al-Assad to remain at the helm. The key to the relations between our two countries starts by understanding our approach to the Syrian issue. So you have to stop giving [the Syrian regime] political support, especially at the UN Security Council, as well as military and economic support. And we guarantee you that Russia’s interests in Syria and on the Mediterranean coast will not be affected one bit. In the future, Syria will be ruled by a moderate and democratic regime that will be directly sponsored by us and that will have an interest in understanding Russia's interests and role in the region.”
"Bandar discussed the potential cooperation between the two countries if an understanding could be reached on a number of issues, especially Syria. He discussed at length the matter of oil and investment cooperation, saying, “Let us examine how to put together a unified Russian-Saudi strategy on the subject of oil. The aim is to agree on the price of oil and production quantities that keep the price stable in global oil markets..."
...As an example, I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi on the Black Sea next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us, and they will not move in the Syrian territory’s direction without coordinating with us. These groups do not scare us. We use them in the face of the Syrian regime but they will have no role or influence in Syria’s political future.”
The Russian president responded to Bandar, saying, “Our stance on Assad will never change. We believe that the Syrian regime is the best speaker on behalf of the Syrian people, and not those liver eaters. During the Geneva I Conference, we agreed with the Americans on a package of understandings, and they agreed that the Syrian regime will be part of any settlement. Later on, they decided to renege on Geneva I. In all meetings of Russian and American experts, we reiterated our position. In his upcoming meeting with his American counterpart John Kerry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will stress the importance of making every possible effort to rapidly reach a political settlement to the Syrian crisis so as to prevent further bloodshed.”

Along with Saudi officials, the US allegedly gave the Saudi intelligence chief the thumbs up to conduct these talks with Russia, which comes as no surprise. Bandar is American-educated, both military and collegiate, served as a highly influential Saudi Ambassador to the U.S., and the CIA totally loves the guy.
They [Saudi officials] believed that Prince Bandar, a veteran of the diplomatic intrigues of Washington and the Arab world, could deliver what the CIA couldn't: planeloads of money and arms, and, as one U.S. diplomat put it, wasta, Arabic for under-the-table clout.

Well.... Russia has some balls
Russia is going to fall into a third world country soon. They are standing up to a world economic power and telling them to go fuck themselves over the issue of Syria.
I smell even more CIA meddling. I guess they're bound and determined to succeed at least once before they quit, eh?

The future of fossile fuel is in North America and Russia.
All the other countries we've held out through buying oil from them such as the Arabs are going to run dry very soon.
Yeah, terrorism, because Russia has a history of taking that lightly, right?
If this is true, it has some pretty large implications. Keep in mind that Tamerlan Tsarnaev sought training from Chechen rebels, attempted to join them and reportedly met with quite a few people associated to them(Chechen militant government). So, if it's really true and the Saudi government influences the Caucasus Emirate... well, at the very least it's an interesting connection.

There is seriously a special kind of stupid going on to do that, though. Massive amounts of hubris.
Sounds like a Tom Clancy novel.
Who would go to the aid of the Saudi's if Russia seeked to do harm to them as some sort of redemption, legally or physically?

The only friends they have are the ones they can buy.
I am honestly quite skeptical of these "leaked" documents. Impossible to validate and it makes pretty big claims.

Russia owns the natural resources.
While the standard of living in Russia is not exactly exemplary, the Russian state is quite powerful and influential. Russia is still a world power, it is not a mere backwater country.
For example they've got most of Europe by the balls because they control a large portion of the petroleum supply.

Third world was the nonaligned movement you natistanic
They essentially said, "We're taking over influence and control of Syria from you or else".
People of Syria don't get to choose, they can be ruled by Czar Putin or King Abdul.

B-but Obama said this wasn't about a regime change.
He wouldn't lie guys
right guys

Secret oil deal? Secret to whom?
Oh boy. Terrorism and Russia do not go well together. Last time they had a terrorist attack, they gassed the terrorists, then went in with their anti-terrorism group and cleaned the ones up that survived. Even the suicide bombers didn't get a chance to fight back.
