Police seized Leonarda from a school field trip last week and expelled her and her family from France. The case has prompted protests across France.

A 15-year-old schoolgirl is at the center of an emotional debate in France over the country's immigration policies. Leonarda Dibrani was taken away by police during a field trip with her school class last week and deported along with her parents and five siblings to Kosovo. Many French are outraged at the way she was seized. And whether the deportation was legal or not, many say the action runs contrary to French human rights values. Thousands of high school students took to the streets of Paris and other French cities for a second day Friday to demand that Leonarda be allowed to return to France. "We claim to be a country of human rights and asylum, yet we send a young girl back to a country she doesn't even know and where she has no future," says Yusef Bonmain, an 11th grader who was taking part in the protests. The case has echoes of the debate in the U.S. over immigration and the status of those who came to the country illegally as children and have little or no connection to the land of their birth. French media are reporting that the Dibrani family came illegally to France from Kosovo about five years ago because they are Roma, sometimes referred to as Gypsies, and faced discrimination and few opportunities there. This week, French television networks caught up with Leonarda back in Kosovo and have been broadcasting interviews with her. "I was so ashamed," she says of being taken away by police in front of her classmates. "Everyone was asking me what I'd done. I was crying. This isn't my home here [in Kosovo]. My home is in France. I'm scared to go out here, and I don't even speak the language." ...
Read the rest of the article here: http://www.npr.org/blogs/parallels/2013/10/18/237119851/in-france-deportation-of-teenage-girl-ignites-fierce-debate Please no racism in this thread.
They couldn't find a better time to carry out the deportation? They just had to humiliate her in front of her classmates while on a field trip? Not to mention that the deportation itself is incredibly dumb because it sounds like she has practically no ties to Kosovo other than her parents.
I think France is particularly harsh when it comes to deporting people so this isn't a surprise.
The worst part of this is, being underage, she wasn't actually in any illegal situation. She wasn't violating any law. Yet they did all that shit.
I think France is particularly harsh when it comes to deporting people so this isn't a surprise.
The saddest thing is, this isn't even getting media coverage because of the deportation. It's getting media coverage because the cops showed up at school (or rather during a school trip) to arrest the kid. Last time it happened it was a 6-something year old kid who was arrested in the middle of class with three cops just walking into a room full of kids and taking one away for some random petty reason (he wasn't part of the gypsy community). Manuel Valls is a fucking xenophobic asshole with a hate-boner for Gypsies and despite regularly getting shit for his blatant hatred, he never got close to being fired. People are demanding him to resign and I hope he does so.
I think France is particularly harsh when it comes to deporting people so this isn't a surprise.
I recall reading France is the most homophobic and racist nation in Europe.
Please no racism in this thread.
A thread about a Roma person being deported Yeah dude all the racists of the site are going to leap in and circlejerk about how they deserve it, sad to say [editline]18th October 2013[/editline]
I recall reading France is the most homophobic and racist nation in Europe.
Eastern Europe and the Baltic would probably win that crown
I recall reading France is the most homophobic and racist nation in Europe.
The UK has recently had a huge outbreak of xenophobia (especially towards Muslims) and several countries including Greece and Sweden have had some issues with growing hatred recently, so I wouldn't say France is the worst for that matter. It certainly is the most vocal at the moment though.
The worst part of this is, being underage, she wasn't actually in any illegal situation. She wasn't violating any law. Yet they did all that shit.
I'm not sure which would be worse, this or deporting her parents while putting her in a foster home just so she stays.
I'm not sure which would be worse, this or deporting her parents while putting her in a foster home just so she stays.
The minister in charge of this is so insanely racist and hateful that there's no way he would have even considered putting her in a foster home. During the last government (under Sarkozy), the minister of home affairs commissioned a courtroom to be built IN THE FUCKING ROISSY AIRPORT, for the sole purpose of judging immigrants away from the city, and immediately dump them in planes. At the time, the decision caused a bit of a stir but remained rather silenced by the media. Then came the new government, and Manuel Valls as the new minister of home affairs. Keep in mind this is a socialist government, that has never stopped emphasizing on how much they care about people, and this guy right here instead of cancelling the project decides to run with it and justifies it in the worst way possible. Long story short, Valls is xenophobic as fuck and the raging hypocrisy in our current government is fucking stunning.

It makes sense from a strategic perspective.
Yeah nevermind the psychological trauma, social uproar and general inhumanity of having the police arrest an underage girl in the middle of a fucking school trip.
Better PR-wise than a standoff there the family kills themselves during a siege.
Better PR-wise than a standoff there the family kills themselves during a siege.
Do you really expect a small family of gypsies to turn into rampaging murdermachines, shit out guns from nowhere (owning a gun is illegal in France and considering how poor Gypsies tend to be I'm pretty sure illegal gypsy immigrants don't have the money or the will to buy several firearms on the black market and enough ammunition to go with it) and kill entire rows of policemen ? Like, seriously. The PR disaster here is to have sent the police to fetch a schoolgirl during a trip, there's no dodging or excusing that.
The worst part of this is, being underage, she wasn't actually in any illegal situation. She wasn't violating any law. Yet they did all that shit.
The way it has been carried out is disgusting for sure. I think we can all agree on that. She's essentially collateral damage, what isn't said in the first post snippet of the article is that her dad lied about the origins of most of the family members. Most of them (including the mom) have the Italian nationality and last I heard that's not really Kosovo. Lies tend to backfire at lightspeed and this situation is the result of one. What I'll remember from this whole thing is that we had yet another case of police abuse and the father's lies got his whole family in trouble and expelled. GJ

Poison, stabbing, strangulation. You want to minimize the potential for the kids to be snuffed amidst a standoff. I'm looking at it from a purely clinical perspective. It's devil's advocate.

This is a family of gypsies, not a commando of trained nothing-to-lose hardcore guerrilleros.

Underage people do not require an authorization here

Europe has always treated the Roma/Gypsy people like shite. Same with African immigrants.
Europe has always treated the Roma/Gypsy people like shite. Same with African immigrants.
As a tourist in Paris (I was living in Germany at this time) I can understand why. In my short time there I was constantly being approached by gypsies handing me notes saying their mother has cancer or whatever begging for money. In one instance this little kid without shoes came up to my mother and did the same thing, and when she told him she didn't have any money to give, he pointed at my mother's golden bangles that she had custom made when my siblings and I were born (gold was much cheaper back then) telling her to give him those. Not 'ask' mind you, told. When my mother made a disgusted look and gripped her bangles, the kid ran away. I followed him with my eyes to see him run back to his presumed mother who was wearing a nice dress, had her hair done in a bun, had those big ol' sunglasses, smoking and holding an H&M bag. I wouldn't say I hate gypsies, especially considering I know nothing about them, but this my experience with them.

The purpose of my post is just that, an ignorant outside view, I know nothing else about gypsies.
Then why did you post it?

Such stories are irrelevant in this thread
Why are you posting an ignorant outside view? It's irrelevant and misleading. There is no reason for it unless you're purposefully trying to spread misinformation.
quote
but he's asking why you bother to post an ignorant outside view when you know it's just going to get boxed
