Source
Microsoft has released the Windows 8.1 update for its flagship operating system. The download seeks to address some of the criticisms levelled at the original version of Windows 8. In particular, the update restores the start button and allows a computer to boot up with a traditional desktop interface. The launch comes at a critical time for Microsoft as it seeks a new boss, with PC sales experiencing a long decline. Windows 8 sought to bridge the gap between touchscreen devices, such as tablets and smartphones, and more traditional form laptops and desktop machines. As such it had an interface built of tiles that could be tapped or swiped to open applications.
[t]http://puu.sh/4Snk3/d6e308fb28.jpg[/t] [t]http://puu.sh/4Snqi/a97e805e9d.jpg[/t] Although as expected with over-the-air updates from any company, there are issues currently. [t]http://puu.sh/4SnK5/2ab610721d.jpg[/t] EDIT Seems restarting fixed the above issue. If you don't see it in the store then Paul Simon has a solution:
Oh! Searching for updates, and installing the one it found (something for windows defender), then restarting made the 8.1 update appear in the Windows Store.
Downloading like a motherfucker.
Wayy ahead of you...
I can't find it on the store, but I'm on the preview so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Works fine for me. If you have Windows 8, definitely install this.
Its not there for me
I can't find it on the store, but I'm on the preview so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I think you can't upgrade from the 8.1 preview to the final build.
I can't find it on the store either, this has been annoying me all day.
Can't wait till "windows 8 suck cause metro ! !!!!" posts start clogging up this thread.
windows 8 suck cause metro ! !!!!
It's very annoying that I have to turn on UAC just to open the store. I'll do it, install 8.1, and turn off UAC again after two or three resets of my computer.
jk win8 is great. no update has shown up as of yet tho :(
Its pretty great
I think you can't upgrade from the 8.1 preview to the final build.
What? You've got to be kidding. As far as I know there's no way to downgrade to regular Windows 8 without wiping everything, so I'm just stuck here unless I re-install Windows?
huh, you do? I don't
Yeah. When I go to open the store via metro it says
Really good update. Feels brand new.
Yep, feels good so far.

When I go to open the store via metro it says
Why would you disable UAC in the first place?
I was reading the CNN article about it
But when you're in desktop mode and you click the Start button, it won't take you completely out of the desktop. Instead, a semi-transparent version of the Modern UI will float on top of the desktop, allowing you to choose an app. That feature also allows you to control how you organize the Start screen. You can quickly lump together all the icons for your desktop apps in the Modern UI and label them as such.

To make Windows 8.1 users feel less locked into a single app, snap view will automatically launch in certain situations. For example, if you're reading an email and you click on a link, you will no longer exit the email app and go into the browser. Instead, the screen will automatically split itself into two (if it isn't already), and Internet Explorer will pop up right next to your email app.
That solves all my issues with Win 8.
It's conspicuously absent for me, too.
Why would you disable UAC in the first place?
That annoying "Are you sure you want to run this?" thing with a lot of programs. It's annoying in Vista/7 at least.
That annoying "Are you sure you want to run this?" thing with a lot of programs. It's annoying in Vista/7 at least.
I disagree, it can also stop stuff running that you potentially might not want running.
Well, Either I can open the store without UAC or I have UAC on and it's so unintrusive I haven't noticed it.
It seems you can, although it depends on how you installed the preview... [editline]17th October 2013[/editline] Why would you disable UAC in the first place?
Because it is highly annoying to deal with. There's no point in having it if you know your PC and what should be running on it so you would know what shouldn't be running on it. UAC is not for people who know computers.
That annoying "Are you sure you want to run this?" thing with a lot of programs. It's annoying in Vista/7 at least.
it's been years since they fixed in in Windows 7, it's fine, leaving it off is a serious security hole
If the update is not showing up kill "Store" in task manager and relaunch it.
I disagree, it can also stop stuff running that you potentially might not want running.
So can a firewall. So can any form of security software.
That annoying "Are you sure you want to run this?" thing with a lot of programs. It's annoying in Vista/7 at least.
Then put it on the setting that only notifies you if programs want to make changes on their own.
Because it is highly annoying to deal with.
