I honestly really like the recent media coverage of the awful business practices of Activision/Bungie. As much as it pains me but Destiny 2 is a mess and some of the shit that the devs pulled is horrible.
I watched my brother play a bit of Destiny 2 on his PS4 over the holidays and it looked boring as fuck. It was like I was watching a CoD MW2 total-conversion-mod deathmatch.
Then I hooked up the Switch and we beat Mario Odyssey with 370 moons together in less than a day and had hella fun taking turns on challenges/portions of zones.
Do the big publishers not understand that having a game without any microtransaction garbage is practically automatic good pr.

I guess it's highly subjective but I absolutely adored the gameplay of Destiny 1, especially the more difficult and advanced activities that you could do. The gameplay just feels incredibly intense, a shame that Destiny 2 didn't expand upon this and remained really stale. I wish the game was better and that the devs would pull their shit together but in this state I cannot honestly play the game.
I was looking forward to Destiny 2 being on PC (I don't own currentgen consoles) because of that Chris Franklin video where he described the first game as being this Aninal Crossing type of experience, where you play everyday, sort of a chore even; but it's a shooter with great gamefeel.
I played a little of the beta before the second game released, and didn't get into it
Destiny 1 is a game that started mediocre then got pretty great.
Destiny 2 is a game that started mediocre then somehow got worse.

it's basically
take no risks or you're fired- the game
I wonder if this could had all been avoided if Bungie stuck with Microsoft.
Most likely, I'd think. I'd wager Microsoft must be kicking themselves for losing the one thing that really sold the xbox in the first place. (Well, Bungie that is.)
couldn't they just make it basically like the original halo, 2 and 3 but with a different skin

isn't that what destiny is?

i wish
it's more like borderlands + warframe but with much less content
the core gameplay is still super fun, but the rest of the game could be so much better if it wasn't held back by a shitty publisher

I'd reckon MS would probably push Bungie into making more Halo, which they didn't want to do. Granted, I don't think signing with Activision was a genius idea. Not sure what they were thinking. That's like going from working an okay, pushy boss to literally unzipping your pants and putting your dick in the devil's death grip.

well destiny is practically 90% online
doesnt have much of a singleplayer campaign, that i know of
TBH I can't blame activision entirely for this, they are the devil yes but Bungie chose to sign on with them, being that their higher ups were vets in the industry who know what Activision is all about and can likely read a contract; I seriously doubt they went into this not knowing what they were getting into.
Also if I remember correctly, Marty's wrongful termination (which involved his stake in the company and shit ton of his pay being snatched along with it) was between him and Bungie with there being no actual evidence Activision had anything to do with it.

So imagine his disappointment when, shortly before E3 2013 as Bungie was preparing a trailer for Destiny featuring O’Donnell’s music, Activision stepped in and took over trailer creation, supplying its own music instead.
According to the court documents, O’Donnell was furious. He believed Activision had overstepped its role by taking over creative control of the trailer. Bungie CEO Harold Ryan and the rest of management agreed and filed a complaint with Activision, but the publisher overruled it. The audio director’s frustrations were compounded by the fact that his desire to see Music of the Spheres produced in its entirety as a separate audio release, a prospect that neither Activision nor Bungie seemed keen on.
O’Donnell responded to the Activision-scored trailer by tweeting during the game’s E3 presentation that the music was not Bungie’s, threatening fellow employees in an attempt to keep the trailer from being posted online and interrupted press briefings.
O’Donnell believed the Bungie spirit was being compromised by the Activision agreement, and perhaps they were. But management saw his actions as disruptive and harmful. O’Donnell was given a poor employee review in the fall of 2013. In lieu of his next review in February 2014, Bungie drafted a termination agreement.
reminder that E3 2013 trailer is drastically different than the main game

How did the industry get in the state that literally none of the big players are anything less than sleazy?
Activision, EA, and Ubisoft all vy for position as the worst of the lot (tossing that around like a hot potato, though I think EA is the worst more often than not) and load their games with microtransactions, lootboxes, and gamer unfriendly practices. Bethesda releases incomplete piles of shit over and over and over again without even trying to fix any of the problems their games have, and worse yet they do that shit where they don't give early review copies for games any more. Even Valve, our beloved savior, has stopped producing the games we love and has become a platform for the scummiest little indie devs on the net. Even the guys at Nintendo keep taking down footage of games on youtube.
Video gaming has become a cold and desolate place in the last five years. It was five years ago when Valve released their newest games and when Bungie closed Halo stats and signed with Activision. EA and Ubi have grown worse. Nintendo is the only good dev left, and they’ve always been nasty about derivative works on their IPs, especially Nintendo of Japan.
Where did all the good devs go? Where did the titans of the realm go, the Joe Statens and the Marty O’Donnells?
Are we going to be doomed to yearly rereleases of games a la Todd Howard? I fucking pray not.
The possible reason Destiny 2 is worse is because Activision has more grab over D2 than they do D1.
Activision has High moon and Vicarious visions making D2 Content for bungie.
Vicarious handles the PC port while High moon does ????????
High Moon is working on DLC content, I believe. I believe they also had a large hand in making Rise of Iron?
one must wonder, what would be Destiny 1 and 2 quality w/o Activision ...
probably 9 of 10 or 10 of 10 in quality scale and amazing unforgettable
which is now below 5 and going lower each iteration and most of players already forgot it exists
this happens if you sign your soul, erm company to 10 years contract with such publisher
Do the big publishers not understand that having a game without any microtransaction garbage is practically automatic good pr.
They think the millions they'll make off of whales is worth the bad press, I wouldn't be surprised if Destiny 2 has already made more money than D1's first year
Destiny 1 is a game that started mediocre then got pretty great.

To be fair, Destiny 1 took quite a while to get better, Destiny 2 has been out for almost 4 months.

the issue is that D2 didnt jump off of D1 on launch as a sequel should, it pretty much regressed back to pre-DLC D1 only this time it started out with microtransactions on launch
there is no excuse for them to have taken none of the feedback from D1 into consideration during D2's development
I don't get how publishers think that they're suddenly game devs and can change stuff when they want.

honestly i think its a combo of time constraints (they needed to do a destiny release every year) and the fact that Destiny 2 rebuilt the entire engine from the first game because the D1 engine was ultra-ghetto tier shit. They didn't have enough time to implement Age of Triumph-parity features.
D1's engine was allegedly so bad that you had to load a level for 8 hours and if the level didnt crash then you can move a node a few inches to the left.
I hope alot of them pop back up in the usual destiny april update.
High Moon is working on DLC content, I believe. I believe they also had a large hand in making Rise of Iron?
And that makes me sad.
The publishers are just milking casual players for all their money
Do the big publishers not understand that having a game without any microtransaction garbage is practically automatic good pr.
Probably, but gaming isn't about passion and creation anymore. It's another industrialized commodity to sell. That's why most AAA games these days are shallow and hollow and bland, or regurgitated from the last year's version. They're made to make money and it really shows. The only real good aspect of them are the visuals, where the people with actual talent and passion for what they do shine through. You can see the same thing in Hollywood. Oh look, another boring super hero movie with very flat visuals. It's not because they really care about super heroes, it's just the hot thing bringing in the most money
That's why Indy games are such a hit lately. They're often original, and have legit CARE put into it because the people making it CARE about the GAME, and not so much the money. It's not always the case, but look at something like Stardew Valley. Is that anywhere near a cash grab or more of a passion project that obviously had care put into it
I wonder how different the 26th Call of Duty game is going to be /s
And yes, I counted, It will be 26
Interesting that activision was the first third party dev/publisher, and now they're regarded as one of the worst.

Destiny is 100 percent online, actually - you can't even start the game unless your console is connected to the internet, and anytime Bungie's servers go down, the entire game crashes back to the title screen.
