Tunisia's governing Islamist party has said it will not support making sharia, or Islamic law, the main source of legislation in a new constitution and will maintain the secular nature of the state.
Ennahda's stance on an issue that has increasingly polarised the country since its January 2011 revolution was criticised by hardline Islamists who wanted full-blown sharia, but welcomed by secular parties. ...
"We are not going to use the law to impose religion," Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi told journalists after the moderate Islamist party's constituent committee voted to maintain the constitutional article by 52 votes to 12.

Good, Sharia law is inhumane as hell.
This will change the minds of absolutely no one in the American right wing, as usual.
That's wonderful!
At least one country has some sense in the middle east.
Good news for everyone in Tunisia. I hope their new laws will be just for all.
Oh man, finally.
Was scared thinking this was April Fools related but I'm glad it's not.
Good for them!

Or, you know, except me.
I hope Tunisia becomes a gleaming Idol in Africa/the Middle East.
This is great news for Tunisia.

One would hope, but this could all go to hell in about a week, unfortunately.
look at what happened to Libya after they won.
it's a deadly cycle. but maybe this one won't be as bad.

Bad choice of words there.
Tunisia for Turkey 2012.

This is awesome c:
The only thing I like about Syria law is it discourages people to commit crime.
Its good that they reject it though.

Too bad it redefines what is a crime.

But Tunisia won first -infact started this whole revolution thing off - and they've been doing pretty good so far
Good, Sharia law is inhumane as hell.
Depends on how it's used, it's not necessarily inhumane.

As long as you're male.
This should double the amount of suicide bombers in Tunisia.

Tunisia's been stable for ages though
In fact we have known Ennahda rejects sharia for ages too, since before the election. I guess if there's any news to be had here it's that they're sticking to their promises
52 votes to 12.
That's like ultra awesome

And straight.
Good for them! Seriously!
Maybe Tunisia will become a nice place to vacation some day?
Excluding Sharia law from the constitution is one thing. How well the population adheres and mixes with the secular constitution is another. Tunisia's fairly lax on the religious matters, so it's not hopeless.

They've been living with a secular constitution for decades

Well there is a liberal and then there is a more extremist intepretation of the Quran. How sharia laws are applied depends on how the Quran is intepreted.

No society should be based off religious texts because it naturally will treat non-conformists poorly.
[editline]2nd April 2012[/editline]
I mean, how would you feel if the United States threw out the Constitution and replaced it with the Bible? No matter how loose of an interpretation it is, it's going to suck for some people.
As long as you're male.
Blanket statements like these are not sufficient enough to define a set of moral codes that is very much interpreted differently. On a national level there is no doubt that many nations that uphold sharia law have been accused of multiple human rights violations. And I do agree that a society should not strictly adhere to religious scripts. But the fact is that on personal levels there are gay and women Muslims who uphold sharia. I honestly can't see how this is so difficult to comprehend for people.
Honestly statements like those are just as bad as extremist right-wingers preaching about "dem dirty Mooslims invading our country with their shahreea laws".
