Lena Sclove, 22, told a crowd of more than 50 students at the Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island, on Tuesday that the university found her assailant responsible for four counts of student misconduct, but will allow him back at the school in the fall. "I was just so angry, and the first thought I had was I can't finish my degree here," Sclove told The Huffington Post. "They're letting him come right back, so either I need to take two years off until he graduates or I need to transfer somewhere else. … I did not do anything wrong, and yet I'm the one who's going to take time off or transfer." On Aug. 2, 2013, Sclove was choked and sexually assaulted after a party by a man she had considered a friend. She reported the assault to the university within two weeks. A week after an Oct. 11 university conduct board hearing, she was informed her assailant was found responsible on four charges, including sexual violence involving physical force and injury.

Meanwhile, just before Christmas, Sclove discovered she had a spine injury in her neck as a result of being throttled during the attack. She also was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. "I couldn't walk without help," Sclove said. "I wasn't paralyzed, I could move, but had very limited mobility." The physical injury spurred Sclove's decision to hire an attorney and speak out about the university's handling of her case. "The University takes a number of steps, including sexual assault orientation sessions for incoming students, to ensure that every student is aware of applicable policies...."
So why didn't she take it to the police?
I would really like to read the rest of that document.. "I have also determined that given the.."
"The Board's findings reflect their concern about the physical and emotional trauma from the non-consensual sexual contact and from the rough handling of your neck." "Rough handling of your neck." This comment makes me want to choke someone. And I hate that precedent thing. I understand following precedent to some degree is important, but "we don't need to change it, it's happened before so doing it like this again is fine" is so much bullshit. Precedent should be a guideline, not a rule.
Shouldn't cases like this be dealt by court of law rather than of a administrative board? Like, they may have jurisdiction when punishing on campus grounds / academic grounds but also must take in consequences of criminal liability (any charges incurred from a court of law) then decide (e.g. like in this case, the student responsible for the attack would be expulsed and permanently barred from reenrolling due to the fact that they had been charged by a court of law thus bringing the university into disrepute) with a national record system which after multiple flags for criminal liability (charges/indictments) would reduce their chances of enrolling (or permanently bar them, depending on the charges) at another university unless they can prove that they have made an effort to pick up their ethical standards on treating others
So what happened to zero-tolerance? Did it all get used up for stupid reasons like defending against bullies?
This is bullshit. That lowlife, scumsucking, waste of oxygen should get the electric chair.
This is bullshit. That lowlife, scumsucking, waste of oxygen should get the electric chair.
If this event is anything to go by, and if Brown University for whatever reason had the ability to execute people, their electric chair will probably only give you a painful jolt that will cause minor irritation to your left index finger for a few days.
This is bullshit. That lowlife, scumsucking, waste of oxygen should get the electric chair.
Instant, easy death is a little too humane for rapists. In anticipation of the "but muh human life" responses, my best friend was raped, and I could honestly say that I would serve a prison sentence with pride for the reaction I would've had had I been there. It is completely outrageous that Brown would let this kid back on campus. If anything happens, someone should start a campaign defaming/boycotting the school for this irresponsibility.
This is bullshit. That lowlife, scumsucking, waste of oxygen should get the electric chair.
Why the electric chair? It's just such a cruelly bizarre form of execution.
Why the electric chair? It's just such a cruelly bizarre form of execution.
I prefer the modern method of using untested drugs to execute people.
So what happened to zero-tolerance? Did it all get used up for stupid reasons like defending against bullies?
You seem to be talking like it's a high school? It's an Ivy League college
So what happened to zero-tolerance? Did it all get used up for stupid reasons like defending against bullies?
That is a policy more akin to public schools, not private colleges. Also, having zero-tolerance on sexual assault in any college implies you actually care more about women students than running a business that happens to involve education. [editline]25th April 2014[/editline] rate me late for the college/high school thing
Some schools are the most brilliantly ironic institutions in the world it seems. They are centers for teaching and spreading knowledge, yet employ the dumbest people to run them. (zero tolerance, etc.) This is just beyond reason, she should take this to the police so some real action happens.
curious if he was a football player
I couldn't figure out if they are, but their name is "Daniel Kopin" if anyone else wants to try. Either way pretty much everyone at Brown probably has some influence, yeah?
This is bullshit. That lowlife, scumsucking, waste of oxygen should get the electric chair.
That comment was quite the shocker.
The one time where zero tolerance would've worked and you blew it, [del]Brown[/del] school. You blew it.
Considering the zero-tolerance fuckups that have been appearing in the news lately, this is pathetic beyond words.
Good old U.S. education system. Always punishing victims and enabling predators.
Good old U.S. education system. Always punishing victims and enabling predators.
If it happens all the time why is it such a shock it must be on the news?
If it happens all the time why is it such a shock it must be on the news?
Because it isn't done at a university level all that often. It happens all the time at the high school level and lower, where the government can use the courts to keep that shit quiet. Don't want to play ball with the school district? Too bad, your kid is expelled now, oh and by the way, it's a legal requirement to have your kid enrolled in school up until 10th year, so now you've got to find your kid schooling, time to either move to the next district or pay for private school. Guess which of those two options costs a lot of money? Both of them. your Kid being bullied and on the verge of suicide because of it? Well that sucks, because he got in a fight with the bully and since he hit him first, he's suspended and facing expulsion. The education system in this country isn't only broken in terms of how fucking abysmal our students are doing, it's all around broken everywhere. Not a single part of this machine works, each part held together with tape and painted to look nice every year instead of replacing the parts.
This comment makes me want to choke someone.
You mean roughly handle their neck.
Schools are really fucking stupid sometimes. There was (about a year ago) an incident with someone who had a plethora of CHILD PORNOGRAPHY on his computer. Mind you, he was the over-seer and conductor of a YOUTH orchestra that visited twice a week. The school let him back in, and he still has an administrative position. Some universities want to just cover it all up. Brown probably isn't any different.

Aren't university staff meant to be educated?
You seem to be implying there's a humane form of execution.
Please don't start this.
You seem to be implying there's a humane form of execution.
In all fairness... This is why vigilantism exists..
I hope my friend from overseas will be safe at the university here (Not the one there)...
Colleges and universities do not generally have zero tolerance policies like lower level educational facilities do. Besides that, it isn't even government funded or controlled. These are private universities run by private organizations. Furthermore the fact that she didn't bring this to police leads me to doubt whether her claims are really legitimate. It's no doubt a serious offense but there's really no saying whether it happened or not, since there hasn't been any legal action taken.
Wait, how is this guy not in jail? In cases of sexual assault, the schools should have absolutely nothing to do with it. Send that shit straight through the regular criminal justice system.
