Chinese premier Li Keqiang is in Moscow for a meeting with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev said ahead of the meeting China was Russia's "first foreign trade partner," adding the volume of bilateral trade between the two countries doubled in the last six years. The two are hoping to sign dozens of trade pacts, including a huge gas deal agreed in May. Under the 30-year gas deal, Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom will supply 38 billion cubic meters of gas to China each year starting 2019. That is around 10% of all Gazprom's sales. The price was not made public, but is estimated at around $456 billion over the 30-year term. The deal was sealed at the height of the crisis in Ukraine. Europe is dependent on Russian energy, as around 30% of Europe's gas comes from Russia. A disruption to the flow would cause a major problem for Europe. Russia is hoping its economy will get a boost from its relationship with China. Sanctions imposed on Russia by Western countries in the light of the conflict in Ukraine have slowed down its economic growth. This is going to be like two high school girls who are mad each other getting a mutual friend to pass notes between each other even though they are only 2 seats apart
All according to China's plan.
Ha jokes on you, we pivoted towards China some 40 years ago USA USA USA Seriously other than gas and the few bits of Russian tech that aren't from 1970, what does Russia have to offer the Chinese in terms of exports

So instead of a bunch of poorly hand crafted clunky shit, Russians will get to enjoy poorly manufactured plastic shit? [/cliche] I'm surprised. I thought Russia and China had their hands in each other's back pockets for decades.

must be pretty easy to pivot something that has crumbled to nothing recently
And this is why sanctions do not work.
China will grow larger.
China's leaders really are wily bastards, I guess that's one of the advantage of having your entire political system be cutthroat as fuck for over 500 years.
And this is why sanctions do not work.
Besides the fact that Russia is in shambles right now?
Besides the fact that Russia is in shambles right now?
What do you mean by "in shambles"? Because as far as I can see, life here in Russia is the same as it was minus rise of dollar/euro.
What do you mean by "in shambles"? Because as far as I can see, life here in Russia is the same as it was minus rise of dollar/euro.
Your currency is in freefall, life will not be the same in 6 months when raw imports cost 1000x more and the governments cash is worth more as fuel [editline]14th October 2014[/editline] Even if China can prop up the Russian economy (which it can't) it can't prop up the russian currency which means the gas deal won't help much
And this is why sanctions do not work.
So they don't work because they did exactly what they were supposed to do?
So they don't work because they did exactly what they were supposed to do?
Leave excess produce in EU and make many people lose profit? Was the plan to hurt our own citizens?
Sanctions work and we are pretty fucked, after all first time in history a dollar is worth 40 rubles. Never been that high. However the government haven't collapsed yet, no raider gangs killing people for a glass of water, we haven't stated eating human flesh yet. Nothing like western media portrays our everyday life. I don't think EU guys are noticing the sanction effect either, it's just to early to be noticed by common citizens. Well yeah rubble is pretty low, but my cost of life remains the same as it was for now (because I get paid in rubles and food didn't go up in price, yet). Soon we will all feel it tho.
And this is why sanctions do not work.
Uh, no, not really. The sanctions are forcing Russia to turn to less-convenient alternatives to sustain their economy and their government is already feeling the strain. We can't blockade them from the rest of the world but we can exclude them from the Western economic system that they depend on for economic development. What did you expect was going to happen?
Besides the fact that Russia is in shambles right now?
So this is what American propaganda does to people?
So they don't work because they did exactly what they were supposed to do?
They were supposed to convince Putin to stop being a dickbag in Ukraine. They did nothing of the sort, all they've done is make Russia even harder to try to convince not to be a dickbag by shifting its economy towards China rather than Europe. They did the opposite of what they were intended to do. Which is the norm, sanctions simply do not work. I don't even know why the world leaders even bother with them, I can't find a single instance of sanctions causing a country to stop doing something it's not supposed to do.
