Independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich is pushing for changes to state laws that he says allow private schools to discriminate against gay students.
Mr Greenwich says the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act contains exemptions that mean private schools can refuse entry to or expel students based on their sexuality.
He plans to introduce a private member's bill into parliament to remove the exemptions.
"Currently in NSW students can cruelly be expelled for being gay. This is wrong and my bill will end this," Mr Greenwich said in a statement on Sunday.
his name really threw me off because I live in Greenwich and thought it would apply to here :-(
While I see the obvious issue and agree that such discrimination should be illegal, I am not sure if I would want to go to school where I clearly wouldn't be welcome from the beginning.
Sounds good. No one should be denied access to anything because of their sexuality.
Also what bullying fuck would abide by the rules? Do you think they would stop being homophobic because there is a law on it? Of course not.
It's directed to head masters and such who have the power to expel students for what think isn't right, if they did after the bill is granted then the student + family could sue for violating the discrimination bill for NSW
And yet Gay marriage doesn't seem possible for awhile in Australia...
I understand why they ban gays. It's an all boy school and they like boys which pretty much defeats the purpose of being able to focus on their studies.
They still shouldn't do it.
Except realistically a private school would probably rarely, if not never suspend a student for being gay. They don't receive enough money from the government (being private they shouldn't receive anything at all) and they need the income to operate. I can understand it if it threatens the image of the school, but that doesn't really relate to whether a student is gay or not.
I guess it's the thought that counts, so yeah I don't know why private schools were exempt in the first place.

Yeah because relationships between boys and girls at normal schools don't distract from studies...

Because all men are slaves to the whims of their penises, right
misandry of the highest order
If your are publicly funded you should be held accountable to the same laws as any other public education institution is regardless of religious affiliation
It's good to see that people are doing something to change this almost immovable hate of different sexualities.
