Almost one hundred years after a group of explorers set out across the frozen landscape of Antarctica to set up supply depots for famed explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, a box of 22 never-before-seen exposed but unprocessed negatives taken by the group’s photographer has been unearthed in one of those shacks, preserved in a block of ice.
The New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust is still trying to figure out who the author of the photographs was and to which expedition they belonged to.
As it stands; They believe the photographer to possibly be Arnold Patrick Spencer-Smith who's expedition was sent down to the Antarctic to establish Supply Depots for Sir Ernest Shackleton. It is believed their expedition went astray when their boat drifted out to sea during a particularly fierce blizzard in 1922. Three members, including Arnold Spencer-Smith, perished on the Island they were stranded on before help could arrive.
Crazy cool, the last of their legacy;

This is beyond amazing, holy fuck. I want to see all of them.
that's pretty fuckin eerie
Seeing never before seen history like this is really cool.
I guess the NZAHT site is currently having overload issues. I don't know if a lot of folks are trying to view those pictures and all of a sudden the site can't handle the traffic or what- But keep checking to see the rest; there were some neat ones in there when I first got into it. But I only got to really check out a couple before it started an infinite-load.

Or one of them shows something beyond human comprehension, and the site has been cordoned off to protect humanity. :tinfoil:
It's cool to see how well preserved they are to the point that they can still have them be developed.
Shame they had to add those hipster filters to them.
when i first read the title i thought it meant 22,100 year old negatives somehow

A headline with that would probably have been in capitals; exciting stuff always is. No one would type:
"Aliens steal Obama during speech".

fixed, multiple numbers all in numerals is always buggy to read

Haha, i didn't even pick up on that.
Thanks dai.

More like proof of this, really. Brace yourself for six foot tall blind penguins.
It's obviously a viral marketing attempt for Cryostasis 2.

But nah, that's actually really cool. I still can't shake a slightly eerie feeling from really old photos though, mostly knowing that everyone in them is long since dead.

That is fucking creepy.
That is fucking creepy.
Yeah I noticed that, the sheer age of these photos is what makes it that much more eerie.

The silhouette on the left of the man in the middle is pretty weird looking, too.

blistering cold winds and blinding white everything, sunglasses and/or protective goggles would be a pretty standard thing to wear

Woo new zealand
I always like to see large sailing ships in old photographs because they are magnificent. It's a shame so few are still in existence, nevermind seaworthy, especially ones that participated in expeditions like this.

You'd actually be pretty surprised. There are a few dozen still in existence, pale in comparison to times of olde, but nevertheless they still sail the seas! Even congregate together in yearly celebrations and boat races.
I actually hope to try and sail with one, one day; The Bark Europa. Magnificent forms of transportation! The Europa even does frequent Antarctic ventures.
