Faunts is an Indie rock band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, formed in the fall of 2000 by two brothers, Steve and Tim Batke. Faunts are released on Friendly Fire Recordings. In 2005, their debut album High Expectations/Low Results was well-received. In 2006, a 40-minute EP entitled M4 was released that grew out of music crafted to accompany short films for the Film and Video Arts Society. One of the tracks from the M4 EP was featured during the final credits of Bioware's immensely successful 2007 RPG Mass Effect. This immediately raised the band's profile and "a sizeable new audience was exposed to Faunts’ moody, subdued melodies". On November 18, they released a remix album titled Faunts Remixed, featuring remixes by acts such as Mark Templeton and DVAS, which is available exclusively through iTunes. The newest Faunts album, Feel.Love.Thinking.Of was released on February 17th, 2009, and is the result of songwriting over the course of the touring across America.

Paul Arnusch - drums Rob Batke - keyboard, laptop Steven Batke - vocals, guitar Tim Batke - vocals, guitar, keyboard Scott Gallant - bass
I discovered this band during the credits to Bioware's Mass Effect ages ago and fell in love with the credit song (M4 Pt. II) and went on to discover more about the band. I found out that they were a local band, from here in Edmonton and decided to listen to more of their music. Eventually I found the M4 EP and the Remixes and listened to them non-stop. Ever since then, I've gone and bought the rest of their albums. If you're into this kind of thing (alt/indie atmospheric rock) these guys are totally your cup of tea. A quote from the record company's bio.
Write what you know. It is the most common advice offered to young songwriters, and it's probably the best. But in the case of Faunts' approach to songwriting, such advice would be misguided and reductive at best. This is a group of musicians who write what they can imagine. At once symphonic and sprawling; ambient, yet driving, Faunts' latest articulation, the full-length Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. (out February 17th, 2009 on Friendly Fire Recordings) is the culmination of a year of touring, recording, and meticulous exploration of this transcendent imagination. With its effervescent guitars, mathematic loops and synthesizers, surging drums, and seemingly nomadic bass lines, Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. is a fluidic expression of Faunts' painstaking attention to instrumentation and arrangement which allows the buoyantly defiant mood of the record to transverse any one song in particular. This is a band of perfectionists - every movement agonized over, every melody deconstructed and explored - whose labors have resulted in an expansive, layered, textured, and sublime collaboration. Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. perfectly encompasses the band's ambitious, imaginative devotion to sculpting not only a musical moment, but an entire atmosphere which accompanies that moment.
And of course, a thread like this isn't complete without some songs. :D Faunts - M4 (Part II) Faunts - Feel. Hopefully this thread will raise the awareness of this band. I fucking love them and they're so unknown. Not to mention being a local band, they've raised my awareness of local bands in my own city.
Not that bad, i really like em. Good thing is they don't remind me of any other band.. Death Cab for Cutie expect more ambient. But as I listen to them more and more, They don't. THANKS AGAIN they're sick.
Is this the kinda music your into?
Surprisingly, no. At first I didn't think I'd like these guys when I listened to stuff other than M4 Pt II, but I ended up liking everything.
What do you listen to?
I tend to hate indie rock, but this is rather good actually. Unlike most other indie bands the band members don't look like total pricks also, which is somewhat of a plus.
