http://www.polygon.com/2017/3/2/14786762/gdc-award-winners-no-mans-sky

No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games won the award for innovation at this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards, but it clearly wasn’t expecting to. As a result, the indie team wasn’t there in person to accept its award from host Tim Schafer. Why? They were otherwise preoccupied — Hello Games team members who made the trip to San Francisco for GDC were eating dinner at the time — and said they didn’t expect to win anyway.
The GDC is now a joke anyways so I don't blame them.
The GDC is now a joke anyways so I don't blame them.
Is it? Since when did they become disreputable?
The GDC is now a joke anyways so I don't blame them.
They all went to GDC, they just didn't go to the awards.
Is it? Since when did they become disreputable?
It used to be a serious place for professional networking, but nowadays most people there are tryhard indies in it for validation rather than anything more serious. I know several people who work for triple-a dev teams. None of them have gone in the past five years.
Honestly if they had been honest with what No Man's sky had, and didn't lie to the people, the game wouldn't have gotten such a bad rep. I mean it's a cool fucking game in alot of ways, but they hyped it up way beyond what it was.

And when I was there 2 years ago in Cologne it was a great place to get to know the international games industry. There isn't a lot of triple A, no, but that doesn't mean it's tryhard indies. There are lots of smaller and mid-sized studios and international pavilions. All the networking still happens as the big publishers tend to not have stands but have their own private booths for pre-planned meetings. It's still the perfect meeting grounds for professionals.

It's got less content than a 5$ indie game, it's basically spore without the gameplay and creation elements. Just a procedural, not really pretty at all screensaver. There is nothing about it to warrant any prize.
Yep
Why do we hate Tim Shafer
Why do we hate Tim Shafer
He's a hack.

You have really strong opinions for someone who hasn't ever been to GDC and is clearly repeating the opinion of someone else to look informed. This is my second year going with my studio and while there are some bad talks here and there and some indies peddling their products, it's still the de facto professional conference for the year. I've seen some great technical talks about Doom, Overwatch, Job Simulator, and a tons of others from people who aren't "try hard indie devs". I have run into and chatted with John Carmack, as well as lead devs on WOW, Overwatch, and the CEO and lead programmer on Superhot. Garry is also here yet again. What I'm trying to say is it is still a great place to network, learn new things in the industry, and get a pulse for where things are headed. Sure it isn't perfect, but I just had to call you out on your bull shit since others seem to be buying it based off of the results and host of the award show. GDC is going strong, and while no one may care about the game dev choice awards, that doesn't mean there aren't a ton of passionate and experienced devs coming out every year.
Why do we hate Tim Shafer
Unreliable as fuck with money. Broken Age fiasco with the money and completely abandoning Spacebase DF-9
Innovation award for what? Most innovating way to sell someone an empty box?
Innovation award for what? Most innovating way to sell someone an empty box?
Innovative advertisement campaign.
Why do we hate Tim Shafer
My reason is he ditched a game because it didn't sell enough while it was still in alpha early access. Spacebase DF-9 was so fucking promising.
Why do we hate Tim Shafer
Plenty of reasons. First of all let's start with his current brain-child Fig. Let's talk about how he pisses in the face of the people who make him what he is. And of course the currently shimmering jewel in his crown of thorns, Space Base DF-9. The rabbit hole almost doesn't seem to stop once you go down it.
Honestly if they had been honest with what No Man's sky had, and didn't lie to the people, the game wouldn't have gotten such a bad rep.
Unreliable as fuck with money. Broken Age fiasco with the money and completely abandoning Spacebase DF-9
He just can't be trusted to handle money. And this isn't new either, he already did this shit back with Psychonauts and Brutal Legend but back then it was their publishers that suffered, now that he's indie it's the buyers that suffer and it's starting to hit his reputation.
the indie team wasn’t there in person
On their own screen they were there. You just couldn't see them.
i find this absolutely hilarious. Funny that they werent even there just to watch

An award for innovation? Who the hell would--
from host Tim Schafer.
Oh, well yeah that makes sense

Did No Man's Sky really innovate much? It didn't really do anything that Spore or SpaceEngine haven't done better already IIRC
no? it is and has always been a showcase for designers and developers to share ideas and technological advancements? maybe you should look beyond some narrative youre trying to validate?
It's a bit of a mix. There's definitely a lot of gems every year and they afaik easily outnumber the ridiculous parts, though. The awards, however, are the one part I'm absolutely certain is going to be a joke for a while. [editline]2nd March 2017[/editline]
Did No Man's Sky really innovate much? "Innovation" is such a vague term that makes awards with no context like this completely meaningless Can't say I had the pleasure of playing NMS but from what I've seen and heard there was nothing really groundbreaking about the procedural generation- it just looked pretty One of the runner ups was Firewatch which is a walking simulator through and through, regardless of what you think of the genre and the game itself, there's nothing innovative about it
The first Elite game in the 1984 had more content and innovative ambition on hardware not even a quarter of the power of today's machines than the entirety of No Man's Sky.
An award for innovation? Who the hell would-- Oh, well yeah that makes sense
I dont think the hosts choose who win.
I can definitely see the reasoning for it being innovating in the sea of games that was released. But GOD DAMN what a crappy mess it was. edit: i didnt bother to click the link to check the other nominees tho
