• Half-Life Voxel Animation (made with pixel animator 3D)

Hello everyone! I've spent some time (a lot) doing a short animation in Pixel animator 3d on my Xbox 360. I want to share it with people, anyone who might enjoy it. Here it is on Youtube: And the link of it, just in case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7waFPiGhTRo&lc=z123zv15wvrcjxsuc23zepiomknxwjtuh Tell me what you think about it or ask questions.
Hey, ignore all the people giving you boxes, I think it was something unique and awesome keep it up
I think it would have gone a long way to add sound from the game to the video in post. Even if it's just ambient noises, large things like the tram and door, and major dialogue.
I think it's neat, although some ambiance from the game would make it way better. I do like how you added Gordon's ponytail. :v:
Wait you made this in xbox 360? Mega props for that.
Hey, ignore all the people giving you boxes, I think it was something unique and awesome keep it up
Thank you Cyler, that is kind. I apreciate that.
I think it would have gone a long way to add sound from the game to the video in post.
I think it's neat, although some ambiance from the game would make it way better. I do like how you added Gordon's ponytail. :v:
Indeed, it would probably be better with sound, i never edited a video with sound before i guess it is long. The ponytail  I had to be accurate and i thought it was funny too.
Wait you made this in xbox 360? Mega props for that.
Yes, in Pixel Animator, all done cube by cube with my gamepad. It isn't a famous software, i don't think that a lot of people know it. It took long time partially because my Xbox 360 is plugged onto the TV in the living room and i have to share the TV with the rest of the family.
I liked the silent film approach for dialogue. Should have added some music to maximize that effect.
Good work! If you ever get the chance, add sound :D
I thought it was pretty neat! What is Pixel animator anyway? I've never heard of it. Also yea, like Cyler said just ignore all the boxes. They're just too lazy to say why they think it's dumb :V
I thought it was pretty neat! What is Pixel animator anyway? I've never heard of it. Also yea, like Cyler said just ignore all the boxes. Overall it is very low quality, from the way gordan moves about the tram to the way barney moves to the tram. The lack of audio frustrates me more than anything, the quality of the models is about as low as they can get (LOOK AT THOSE FUCKING ARMS!!!!) [t]http://img.ndlee.com/shigbeard/opvss57.png[/t] The legs dont move, models just slide to where they need to go.... Camera moves like you've just gone "Here's point A, here's point B, here's your speed, lets call it a day." No smoothing etc... and the entire thing looks like it was recorded off your monitor using your phone. AND ALL OF THIS IS JUST IN THE FIRST AREA AT THE TRAM!!!!!!! EDIT: I'm not trying to discourage OP from trying to produce something, but put a biiit more effort into your work before sharing. Audio is just as important as video, and work on how you export your video. Add some life into your characters by making them actually interact with their environment instead of just float there like its an episode of supra mayro cyka blyat. Don't take what I'm saying as a reason to stop. Take it as a reason to do better. I only sound angry because I'm an angry person and people who say "IGNORE THE NEGATIVE REACTIONS LOL THEY ARE DUMMMM" are fucking morons.
some criticism
There was only one person saying ignore the dumbs, and it was the first post because, tbh, if you get bad reception but no one tells you why, how are you supposed to improve? If you drop by and leave a dumb without anyone giving a reason why, it really does just discourage OP from making more videos. Encouraging OP isn't a dumb thing to do in the slightest when no one has provided any actual criticism and just lets him know his content is bad; how is that helpful? At least now you've provided some criticism

I originally only reacted dumb because I thought the entire thing was just terrible, and the improvements to be made were blatantly obvious. Clearly from some of the responses I've seen in this thread, blatantly obvious is so fucking hard to spot. What's more harmful than people just rating dumb and moving on is people who will do nothing but say "HEY ITS GREAT" "THIS IS AWESOME" and not say a thing about how it can be improved. It gives the artist a false sense of perfection in a far-from-perfect piece of work. Like sure, encourage op to keep working, but point out the flaws so he can fix them in his next attempt!
Reupload with audio as the dumb dumbs don't like silence, it bores them stupid.

The posts following the first one did make it clear where improvements were to be made, so yeah. Thought you were replying to the first post in the thread so my mistake
criticisms
I mean posting all of that would've been leagues better than just rating DUMB and moving on. At least by pointing out what you think is dumb, you could give them a chance to improve, even if it it's as "blatantly obvious" as you think it is.
I was trying to be positive for him as people just dumped boxes on him initially without really watching the whole thing.
People dumped boxes on me for a comment supporting the poster. :chillout:
i thought it was cute

You know what's even worse than saying 'ignore all the dumbs'? Providing nothing to the conversation other than incredibly spergy whining about what looks to be this kid's first major animation using a really unintuitive interface and retreading criticisms that have already been brought up, but in an incredibly hostile and useless way. It's called 'constructive criticism', not 'be a dick about people giving the kid credit where it's due'
*dumb rant*
I think somebody needs a time out. It's just a silly animation about a video game made in some old weird niche software; there is literally zero reason to get so worked up over it.
I have never seen so many people get so angry over something so pure and adorable never change OP
I have never seen so many people get so angry over something so pure and adorable never change OP
Today I lost my innocence.
Stupid rant with a few good points
This is good criticism for a 3D animation student. :zing: But seriously, OP, correct me if I am wrong, you don't work for Disney, right? No, this is just a hobbyist thing, not really something to be taken that seriously. [editline]9th July 2017[/editline]
I have never seen so many people get so angry over something so pure and adorable never change OP
Whoops, accidentally disagreed. REVERT! AGREE! NOOOOOOO [editline]9th July 2017[/editline] There we go.
I think somebody needs a time out. It's just a silly animation about a video game made in some old weird niche software; there is literally zero reason to get so worked up over it.
I'm literally only saying that there's a ton of things wrong and rather than just say "Good job OP it's great" we should be pointing out what's wrong with it so he can improve, not just say "oh anyone who thinks its bad is dumb lol" because that doesn't improve anyone. If you were making mistakes in math and couldn't multiply any number higher than 5, would you expect someone to say you are doing good? Or would you expect someone to say "Here's how you can improve." And furthermore, would you expect people to call that person who says you need to improve dumb? No. You'd understand you can be better, that you are missing some fundamental basic skills, and that this person, despite how frustrated they are with the mindless yesmen around them saying that your lack of math skills is fine and anyone who says otherwise is dumb, is trying to help you improve your math skills so that in the future should you wish to utilize those skills or further hone them, you have the knowledge to do just that!
As an animation I have no problem with it. Of course there needs to be sound. Sound is 50% of a video.
Just one suggestion. I think it's really great start! But yeah, like everyone is saying, add audio for one. Also! speed it up a little. I watched it on 2x and not only can you still read everything, but the jokes land a little better. But keep it up! The voxel models are actually really good. You did them yourself, right?

Many people have said to you that we don't disagree that there could be some improvements made to the video. 5 posts in and the OP even mirrored that sentiment of his own accord. The thing causing the stir here is that your criticisms seem to be made for self motivated reasons, rather than in the interest of the recipient. As if you say it for your own vindication. Maybe you've received harsh criticism in the past which shook you and caused you to form these opinions, maybe not, I can't claim to know that. But your opinion that giving advice in such a purposefully crass and biting manner can only be considered helpful to everybody who reads it is just straight up incorrect. It can be demotivating and even cause some people to lose their passion to create in the first place. And I know you don't want to be responsible for that. I'm not trying to attack you or the way that you articulate your opinions, as everyone is entitled to express themselves as they see fit, but rather highlighting the consequences your words can have in these scenarios, and urging you to examine the impact you might be having on someone else's well being. Art can form a large part of a person's ability to determine worth in themselves, even if they are just new or aspiring. Or indeed, even if their level of skill isn't up to your standard. Surely you should want to nurture that rather than to attack it?
Hello and thanks to you all for the compliments. I appreciate them a lot. Sorry for my late answer. After the animation of this thread i began working on another one (in Blender this time) and i forgot to come back on the thread.
[...]
Well ... Thank you for speaking your mind. But remember that it is the product of 1 person's work. Plus, it is made with a 2 dollars independent "software" (if i can call it like that) made itself by 1 person, it is running on a 200 bucks, 9 years old Xbox 360. As i do not own an HDPVR to record the image directly from my Xbox, yes, i filmed it with my phone. (an HDPVR is probably more expensive than my Xbox) So please, understand that it isn't comparable to a Pixar movie. There is no sound, yes. But if there was you'd still hate on the image and if not the image, then something else. Maybe the video isn't the issue. Try looking at the entire thing: camera placements, models, dialogues, plot, ideas, etc... . Not just the sound or the lack of arm movements. Before i make this animation, it was just an idea in my head. I turned it into something real. I tried to make all the models as good as possible so that everyone can recognize them easily. I wanted to tell the story in a simple and comprehensible way. I believe i succeeded.
[...] It's just a silly animation about a video game made in some old weird niche software; there is literally zero reason to get so worked up over it.
Right, it is a good description of it.
But seriously, OP, correct me if I am wrong, you don't work for Disney, right?
No. Indeed, i do not work for Disney. I am a simple young amateur. If i had to live from my animations, i'd be in serious trouble.
[...] Also! speed it up a little. I watched it on 2x and not only can you still read everything, but the jokes land a little better. But keep it up! The voxel models are actually really good. You did them yourself, right?
- Ok, good suggestion, i will remember to care about the speed of my future animations. A faster/shorter animation would probably be better. In the software you can choose a total time for your scene, then you can animate in this given time. It is simple to add more time if you need it, but harder to remove it. If you want to make a change in the animation (in PA3D), you have to do it manually (redo everything), which is very long. - Thank you. Yes i made 100 percent of the models myself. The size of the models was limited, so for the biggest ones (walls, rocks, rails) i had to make small chunks and then duplicate them. That's how all the environments were made. They aren't made in 1 model. Here are some other videos made with PA3D, for comparison:
