Physicists who found a new elementary particle last year said on Wednesday it looked like a basic Higgs boson rather than any "super-Higgs" that some cosmologists had hoped might open up more exotic secrets of the universe.
"It does look like the SM (Standard Model) Higgs boson," said physicist Brian Petersen of Atlas, one of two research teams working in parallel on the Higgs project at CERN in Switzerland.
His assertion, on a slide presentation to a conference at CERN and posted on the Internet, was echoed by the other group. "So far, it is looking like an SM Higgs boson," said slides from Colin Bernet of CMS.
Well, guess we'll just have to close up shop then. $3.8 billion well spent. :v

But seriously, they're still running experiments right? Aren't they still examining all the data from the experiments where they found the Higgs?

no, they've abandoned the project entirely. CERN director rolf-dieter heuer was quoted as saying "FUCK THIS SHITTY COLLIDER IT NEVER GIVES ME WHAT I WANT #fuckingpissed"

@DrPetersenYOLO
Ha! Glad we didn't build the Superconducting Super Collider now. Think of all the disappointment.
The LHC closed down last month for two years of work that will double its power, and, it is hoped, the reach of its detectors.
Bad reading

To me this sounds like they just found the Holy Grail, but they want to find a better-looking one.
new experiment: shrink particle colliders to a more manageable size and use them as spaceship weapons
First-world problems.
I asked my parents for a super Higgs and they got me the standard edition #ruinedxmas
fuck you mom i wanted a black higgs boson and got a white one
wow fucking racist
So, the super higgs was the one that went back and time and killed itself right?
I knew It. :v:
So I still don't have an actual answer to everything?
Hey its a start atleast that they've confirmed that rather big piece of the puzzle that is the standard model.
And their ambition is just what any good scientist would do, I congratulate and respect these guys.
Well once again, somehow the universe isnt conforming to expectations.

the universe IS conforming to expectations
the Higgs boson looks to be exactly as we thought it would be, rather than something more interesting

An ecologist researcher I know once used the term "Diss" in the title of a pretty high profile scientific paper (as in "Don't diss..").. Scientists are human too, often with terrible senses of humour.

Well thats what i was getting at, the universe is a bitch.
Even when its what you expected it somehow also isnt.
what would we do without brave men and women like smurfy, working every day behind a computer screen to maximize our lols with silly thread titles? we would get stuff done, that's what.
a salute to smurfy and all other good posters, for saving us from the horrors of productivity.
