http://www.buzzfeed.com/ellievhall/u...se-they-were-i
As many as 40 children at Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City had their lunches seized and thrown away on Tuesday because their parents had fallen behind on payments. “It was pretty traumatic and humiliating,” said Erika Lukes, the mother of an 11-year-old whose lunch was taken away. Lukes told the Salt Lake City Tribune that as far as she knew, she was up-to-date with her payments. “I think it’s despicable. These are young children that shouldn’t be punished or humiliated for something the parents obviously need to clear up.” The large number of students with zero or negative balances at Uintah Elementary prompted the Salt Lake City school district to send a child nutrition manager to the school on Monday to resolve the issue. According to a statement on the district’s website, school officials spent Monday calling parents to let them know that their children owed money for lunches. On Tuesday, although calls to parents continued, the district nutrition manager decided to withhold lunches from students who didn’t have enough money in their accounts. “Unfortunately, children are served lunch before they get to the computer for payment” and students with a negative balance were forced to hand over their trays and watch as they were thrown away (district policy dictates that once food is served to one student, it cannot be served to another). According to the Salt Lake City school district website, elementary school lunches cost $2.00 per meal and parents are able to make payments towards their children’s accounts online. I really really fucking hate my state. Like, please stop.
My school did the exact same thing whenever I ran out of money (twice a month or so)-- except the cashier would always eat my pretzel.
That's fucking disgusting. These kids are in PRIMARY school for fucks sake.
I really really fucking hate my state. Like, please stop.
Why do people say this? This could happen in any state. It's not a state-wide thing, as far as we know. Wasn't Utah the state that was giving homeless people homes? Isn't that a good thing?
they did the same thing in my elementary/middle/ high school so i dont see a big problem with it.
they did the same thing in my elementary/middle/ high school so i dont see a big problem with it.
because its fucking heartless. just because the world was one way when you were younger doesn't mean its that way now.
they did the same thing in my elementary/middle/ high school so i dont see a big problem with it.
Did they literally take food out of little kids' hands cause that's what happened.
Utah was also that state who tried their damndest to stop the gay marriage bill.
Doesn't change the fact that my point was that individually, states can do both good and bad things. It doesn't suddenly give you reason to outright hate the state for one instance.
This is sensationalist as fuck. After I read it I realized it's the same thing all the schools in my state do. Basically the kids go through a lunch line, pick up their food, and at the front of the like they pay for it before they leave. If they can't pay for it, they can't take it with them, very simple. My highschool did the same thing. They can't serve the food to other students the moment the kids touch it, it's a health concern.

It is honestly a hell of a motivator for poor children to go to school.

My school used to do pull me out of class when I was in primary school when my parents missed their payments, until the Ministry of education made it illegal. My school kept doing it for a while and then the parents association denounced them and they got uber fucked in the ass. :)
iirc under a certain income level you get free and or reduced
They have that in Florida, I'm unsure about Utah though. I highly doubt they don't. Once again, this whole thing is blown out of proportion. Even in the article all the parents' complaint is not being notified. That's the real issue here, and it's not that large.
