North Korea sentences US citizen to jail for "hostile acts"
North Korea has sentenced a US citizen to 15 years of prison labour for "hostile acts" against the government, the official Korean Central News Agency said Thursday.
Pae Jun-Ho, known in the United States as Kenneth Bae, was arrested in November as he entered the northeastern port city of Rason.
"The Supreme Court sentenced him to 15 years of compulsory labour for this crime," KCNA said.
Pyongyang has not specified the basis of the crimes allegedly committed by Bae, who is believed to be a Korean-American tour operator.
KCNA said on Saturday when announcing his trial that Bae had "admitted that he committed crimes aimed to topple the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea]".
Suuuuuure, North Korea.
Any chance of the US trying to haul his ass out of there?
I heard all they did was take pictures
Which is why they are doing this

We need the bad spelling rating back. Dumb is too all-encompassing.
that's it, save that poor guy, its just a trick that can start a war

Yeah, that massive north korean tourist industry.
At least he wasn't sentenced to death outright - not like their labor camps are any better, but he has a fighting chance.

Its a source of hard currency for the DPRK, this is only going to dent it this source. They're pretty stupid.
15 years. what the fuck
probably just trade him for a box of crackers and a few bags of rice, and a full box set of madmen seasons for the supreme leaders enjoyment,
we did this kinda crap with Garry powers durring, the cold war, he got 10 to life, stayed maybe like 2 years in Russia by the time it was all said and done, then he was quietly traded
They are going to use him to get the US to do food drops
wtf spellcheck making proper words into garbage tonight

Can anybody link to the first-hand account of living in a labor(/death) camp?
After reading about that I'm not sure how long I'd last in there before I started wishing that they'd executed me. Solitary confinement in a tiny room where you're forced by the walls into a fetal position for weeks or months and unable to actually walk properly when you're finally let out is just the beginning

it's possible, but it would definitely be difficult since the us and nk don't have diplomatic relations as far as i'm aware.
according to the article the us has negotiated the return of prisoners in 2010 and 2011.

i remember hearing a firsthand account about how children would look through rat droppings to find single grains of rice to eat. i think it was from "inside north korea" with lisa ling.

If he rescued Americans from North Korea before, he can do it again.

Apparently he was taking pictures of malnourished, homeless NK children.

bill clinton 2016
The saddest part is that he will not last 15 years. A North Korean prison camp is pretty much the death penalty from what I have heard. I watched a documentary where they interviewed a Ex. NK Prison camp guard, he said that the children in the camp fought for food left in animal feces.
The entire country is starving, I can't imagine how the camps are...
He wanted to topple the regime, well butter my butt and call me a biscuit. Damm tour operators and their master criminal minds.
Now seriously, when I read that, I couldn't but establish a comparison with the inquisition and their forced confessions, I bet my ass the poor lad went through the worst moments in his life. Unfortunately, it'll be nothing compared to what it's coming to him.

Better send Jimmy as well. He says he has no plans to go, which means he's already on the plane.

Can we please just invade them already and liberate those poor people.
god sometimes I just wanna talk to Kimmy personally and just be like "dude wtf why"
he's probably not really running anything, though

It's about time some change happened in that country. It's a massive violation of human rights. I'm surprised the U.N hasn't intervened yet. Kim needs to be brought down a peg.

I've seen a couple of documentaries about people traveling to north korea and one thing that they make very clear is their policy on photo's etc.
If you take a photo of something resembling someone important you must always make a picture of his full image. You can't even cut off the shoes etc.
