Turkey's parliament speaker seeks religious constitution by ditching the "un-islamic" one
Turkey should have a religious constitution, parliament speaker Ismail Kahraman said on Monday, in comments that will likely add to concerns of creeping Islamisation under the ruling AKP party.

"As a Muslim country, why should we be in a situation where we are in retreat from religion?" state-run news agency Anatolia quoted him as saying.
"We are a Muslim country. As a consequence, we must have a religious constitution," the AKP lawmaker told a conference in Istanbul.
"Secularism cannot feature in the new constitution."

It also limited alcohol sales and made efforts to ban mixed-sex dorms at state universities.
This is fucked up on so many levels.. Normally we'd expect a military coup since they claim to the "guardians of the Turkish secularity" but these psychos took over the military by jailing it's high ranking officials.

because not everyone in your country is muslim... or even the same kind of muslim.... or even agrees with your definition of muslim......
this is the same kind of shit we have here in the states with bible-thumpers asking why we don't enshrine their christianity as the official religion

Statistics show that the 99% of the citizens are Sunni Muslim but there's a catch, no one ever changes the "religion" section on their ID.
Hell, even mine says Islam even though I'm a full neckbeard Atheist.
Remove from NATO yet? If they want to be in our alliance, they should have to earn it. Not act like a theocratic dictatorship.
AKP don't have the strength in parliament to actually do it so good luck
I honestly don't see Turkey ever fully losing it's secularism no matter how hard these pricks will try. It's one of Turkey's pillars and something Turks seem to be extremely proud of.
Besides, they didn't get enough votes to change the Constitution, so this is all moot anyway.

Ya but if Iraq has shown, even Sunni Muslims have their own factions
I really do wonder if this will only get worse or will they plateau on the whole "let's be a caliphate!" Thing

Turkey's extremism is more of a weird midpoint between fascism and a Sunni Islamic republic than a hopeful Caliphate.
Ataturk is probably rolling in his grave so fast he could provide enough electricity to power all of Turkey.

I'm curious, since you're Turkish, I'd really like to hear your opinion on what you think Kemalism means to most people in 2016. How divisive would you rate the issue? How have things changed since, say, the last coup?
I so hope they don't get into EU. But now they got Visa to travel freely...

Kemalism is still quite strong in Western Turkey (especially in Aegan provinces such as Izmir), though Istanbul has been lost to Islamists due to migration from the Eastern provinces. Don't get me wrong though, it still doesn't look like a middle eastern city (yet).
The last coup was a US-backed one as a part of the counter-guerilla movement back in the cold war era, it gave a jumpstart to Political Islamism since they were against "godless commies". If the last coup didn't take place then we'd see something called "People's Republic of Turkey".
Tbh I'm not a communist but I'd pick communists over islamists or nationalists (nationalists also tend to be islamists) any day.
How have things changed since, say, the last coup?
Country was in turmoil before the coup, fascists and leftists were shooting eachother pretty much everywhere they come upon. They even burnt down eachother's dormitories and stuff. Majority of the Turkish youth were involved unless they were living in rural areas/or were apolitical. Even my dad was active during those years.
I can't really make a measurement because it depends on what your priorities are, for me its liberty, that's why I kinda wish that the socialists had won before the army intervened. (Majority of the Turkish socialists were Anarchists back then).
I so hope they don't get into EU. But now they got Visa to travel freely...
No worries we're not even getting visa free travel.
Oh also, it's worth mentioning that AKP stated that it was that retard's personal opinion so I guess the case is closed.

And people say this isn't happening and then a country is taken over.
What is wrong with turkey why do they keep doing stupid shit.
"We are a Muslim country. As a consequence, we must have a religious constitution,"
Must have a religious constitution, not because it's smart, logical, good or productive, but because they are an arbitrary "muslim country".

It's an alliance, not a friendship. You don't need to be in cahoots with someone to be part of the same intergovernmental treaty.
With that said, I really want NATO to fuck off already. What kind of ally uses migratory flow as leverage to press ultimatums, whilst importing ISIS oil whilst shooting unarmed kurds in retaliation for terror strikes AND gunning down russian jets? How does this make us look?

I seriously wonder that too why the EU is pretty much ditching their core norms and values just to fellate Erdogan and Turkey.
Even the normally left-leaning or neutral newspapers here are saying openly that the EU just fucked us with this Turkey deal, after multiple foreign journalists and columnists got arrested and detained in Turkey for having written negative articles about Erdogan. Who says Erdogan isn't going to stab us in the back in a few months, ditches his part of the deal, and asks for some more billions so that he can fund his radical buddies on the other side of the border?

Just wondering, why do you have a religion section in your ID? Does it serve any purpose on day to day life? I've really never heard of this and I'm really curious.

I guess it's like in Sweden. 60% are part of the Swedish church but maybe 5% or something are regular churchgoers.

It doesn't serve any purpose other than discriminating non-muslims. Though I've got no idea what the founding officials were thinking when they decided to include something like that written on the ID.
I cant wait to be killed lmao

Vocal minority has become the face of Christianity
It's not exactly the same. American churches don't typically function on massive scales so it's not impossible for them to have fairly consistent views throughout their membership. Mosques can be politically diverse but that very rarely if ever officially separates them from other mosques.
This is messed up. I don't want to bring these people into our democratic process. They may vote for similar things here. According to Pew, 28% of British Muslims want Britain to be an Islamic state.

"These people"?
Do you know, like, anything about the Muslim American community? They are way more liberal than most religious groups in the world, hell they mostly support Bernie even.
By your logic, since Trump is getting massive support in the states, I don't want any Americans in my country.

According to Pew polls, 51% of U.S. Muslims want Sharia in the US. Also, 26% of younger Muslims in America believe suicide bombings are justified. That doesn't sound too liberal. Plus, liberal is wrong about economics.
The muslims mostly only support Bernie because they want to get the free stuff he would provide as far as I can tell. They use a lot of welfare.

Link to this specific survey?

I've noticed this behavior is more common with baptists outside the Bible Belt. They're a vocal minority but they're louder than everyone else.

Rofl, that 51% thing is utter shite and NOT from Pew, but from a dodgy company. Trump also pulled it out his arse to back his horrid stance.
Pew polls show that Muslim Americans support gay marriage, believe in secularism and are overwhelmingly democrats.
Also " The Muslims mostly only support Bernie because they want to get the free stuff he would provide as far as I can tell. They use a lot of welfare." Shows you have no fucking idea what you're talking about, because most Muslim immigrants that came to the states were upper middle class/wealthy people fleeing from the Middle east or Persia, not exactly the kind to "use a lot of welfare". Also Bernie's a jew... so.
