EDIT: here's an article from stuff news, seems to be updated frequently. I can't handle this anymore, it's just too much. why won't it just stop http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/86416268/severe-66-earthquake-hits-hamner-springs-felt-as-far-away-as-auckland just felt this, it's 12:10am here. this was a massive but slow and smooth earthquake, everything was moving about quarter a metre in every axis over the course of about 5 seconds. apparently felt as far as over 1000km away in auckland. in case anyone forgot, Christchurch(very close to hamner springs) was devastated by earthquakes in september 2010 and feburary 2010, the latter of which took lives. I'm very fucking scared, the entire time I was waiting for it to just surge into chaos. will try to update this as more develops. I'm probably not going to sleep anytime soon. geonets results on the earthquake are here. there's already apparently been an aftershock. I hope the people in hamner springs are okay. My news just said it was up all the way too 7.4??
I think the planet should give NZ a break, they haven't even finished rebuilding Christchurch since the last major earthquake.
Yeah that went for ages
updated op with a link to a local news site, seems to be getting update as more information comes through.
What area are you in, MrBunneh?
Christchurch, lived here all my life and been through the first two living on the east side of the city.
I'm in south Christchurch, you going ok?
yeah man just frazzled. so tired of living in this quake mindset, pretty much had only stopped thinking like that this year. and now it all starts again. hope things are okay down there, I hope hamner is all good. they seems to bear the brunt of it.
weird, news sites over here say that USGS reported a magnitude of 7.4, whereas GeoNet says 6.6
NZ Civil Services are saying to get to high ground now, possible tsunami is imminent.
ABC is reporting 7.4. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-11-13/magnitude-7.4-earthquake-hits-near-christchurch/8021922
Just heard on a local news channel that they might be upgrading to a 7.8 or higher.
My friend lives in NZ, just blasted him a message to make sure he's still alive, not sure where abouts he is living over there. Would the whole of NZ felt it?
A tsunami alert has been given for all coastal areas on the east side of New Zealand. Apparently a Tsunami HAS been generated from the warning they just gave on the radio.

A 2 meter wave has hit Kaikoura, New Brighton in Christchurch is apparently being evacuated.
Aw man not a tsunami please [editline]14th November 2016[/editline] This is cool though

I hope with everything I am this isn't a foreshock.
I hope with everything I am this isn't a foreshock.
If 7.4 (possibly 7.8) is a foreshock, the main quake will obliterate New Zealand.
Stay safe NZ facepunchers
From what i'm reading tsunami has made landfall

USGS states it's a 7.8 http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us1000778i#executive http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us1000778i#map 6.5 Aftershock http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us10007795?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook#executive
I just had to help with the evacuation of the coastal area of my town. Residents are sitting in McDonald's now waiting for the tsunami alerts to pass.
USGS states it's a 7.8 http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us1000778i#map
It has been updated as 7.5 from our geo scientists. http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/region/newzealand/2016p858000 There are also aftershocks like every two minutes, you can see them all on the www.geonet.org.nz website.
I'm a bit north of wellington, they only just seemed to have died down, lost power and cell network for a wee bit. My pet rat rode with great bravery atop my shoulder on the intial quake, felt she deserved a mention. We haven't had a biggie like this/these in a while.
Quake knocked out our power in Paraparaumu for a few hours, luckily we've got no tsunami warnings just yet but I've got a few days of provisions ready to go in the car if we need to move further mainland. Radio's staying on for now. Hoping my fellow FP Kiwis are coping with this unusual event, wishing you guys well.
My friend lives in NZ, just blasted him a message to make sure he's still alive, not sure where abouts he is living over there. Would the whole of NZ felt it?
As far as I've heard there have only been several reported injuries so far, haven't heard of any fatalities yet. Chances are your friend is alright, and yeah most of NZ felt it.
