China is aiming to own the race for space in the next decade. China's ambitious and fast-growing space program is targeting a landing on the dark side of the moon by 2018, and reaching Mars before the end of the decade. The country's space agency held a press conference on Tuesday to mark the release of a policy paper, and outlined the government's ambitious goals for exploring deep space. Wu Yanhua, deputy chief of the National Space Administration, said Beijing aims to launch its first Mars probe around 2020 to carry out orbiting and roving exploration, followed by a second mission that would include collection of surface samples from the red planet.
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/12/28/asia/china-space-program-white-paper/index.html To clarify, they're talking about a Mars Probe not people. CNNs title not mine.
china's interest in space exploration and research recently excites me. hopefully it excites people more important than me to get involved from across the globe.
Take me with you (User was banned for this post ("Didn't read the article." - Bradyns))
NASA must be so happy with this considering that means our government will fund them endlessly to win our game of galactic dickwaving.
NASA must be so happy with this considering that means our government will fund them endlessly to win our game of galactic dickwaving.
Read the article. The article says that China's current plans are only to get a probe onto Mars. Something that the USA's Mars Pathfinder did in 1997. Sure, it's wonderful to see that people are interested in space research, but they certainly aren't going to be competing with the United States anytime soon.

Viking program.
can you smell it guys? the smell of a new space race... one can dream. [editline]28th December 2016[/editline]
Read the article.
NASA must be so happy with this considering that means our government will fund them endlessly to win our game of galactic dickwaving.
there's that, but then we have to consider that trump will be in power soon so there's little hope there
there's that, but then we have to consider that trump will be in power soon so there's little hope there
On the other hand, it would be quite an amusing idea to use China as a means of aggravating a Trump presidency into competing in globally beneficial fields. [editline]28th December 2016[/editline] Just tell him the Chinese plan to steal space or something.
there's that, but then we have to consider that trump will be in power soon so there's little hope there
Trump said nasa -> mars etc
Trump said nasa -> mars etc
This post is an incoherent mess. Do you want to try again?

China, pulling out ancient astrological map: "As you can see, we knew about these stars when we were making our horoscope, so you Western powers must recognize the legitimacy that most of the observable universe has been our property since the 12th Century." Rest of world: :what: And so, Space Race Part 2 begins.
Mars Chinatown, with constant smell of fried fish.
This post is an incoherent mess. Do you want to try again?
Arrows are a mystical symbol that have confused people for generations. This is why we should be terrified of Aliens not that China is that scary, but the diceroll

How to put a man on Mars in under a decade: 1.) Wait for the Chinese to say they're putting a probe on Mars. 2.) Tell the media that Communist Chinese robots are invading mars to destroy democracy there. 3.) Buy new warehouse with newly had money to store said newly had money.
With nasas current funding vs results china could match their capability in the year 2050 ive read.
NASA? Lol I doubt many people expect NASA to really be very relivent ever again. SpaceX vows to put people on mars by 2024 using ITS and boeing has promised to beat Musk to Mars. Both companies fly american flags on their craft so as far as I'm conerned it's the same thing. Amerca's still going to Mars, it's just NASA isn't the one doing the heavy lifting anymore.
Read the article. The article says that China's current plans are only to get a probe onto Mars. Something that the USA's Mars Pathfinder did in 1997. Honestly, I'd love to see more rovers, I'm really hoping they can pull a Curiosity route and skycrane down the rover.
Honestly NASA being prohibited to cooperate with China is a pretty dumb move, especially in the long run. I kinda understand the concerns, but space cooperation was a thing even during the worst years of the cold war and benefitted both sides. Today we need cooperation more than ever.

IMO it seems silly that China is on the list of nations (Iran, N. Korea, Cuba, Sudan & Syria) considering just how globalized they are. Its especially sticky considering there is a clause in ITAR that exempts public domain knowledge but still lists commercial satellites on the US munitions list. There is a piece of legislation that is trying to free up commercial/scientific satellites from the USML, but IIRC not much progress. TL;DR I understand their reasoning behind launch technology, but for spacecraft components it seems silly.
