Finally got around to finishing this one from two months ago. I have pictures I can post too.
"Corruption and Decay at a Facility Fit for the Future”
It all sounded like a good idea at the time when it first opened its doors in the mid 1990s, a sprawling entertainment complex surrounded on three sides by the green rolling hills of a golf course, and bordered on the forth by a babbling brook inhabited by mallards. The center, which boasted thousands of square feet of recreational space, offered health and fitness facilities, rollerblading, skateboarding, a rock climbing wall, indoor and outdoor pools, restaurants with catering, a nightclub, computer school, nutrition store and a beauty salon, all operating under one enormous roof. And by most accounts the complex, owned by Jerry Turco Sr., ran fairly smoothly and successfully for several years.
The facility had an interactive play zone for children ages 4 to 12 featuring over 50 free play arcade games, skeeball, pinball machines, a carousel, a rock climbing wall, and 20-station twister tunnel. Party and facility rentals were also available. In addition, there were activities geared towards teens like the skate park, and for adults like the fitness center.
The first problem arose in September of 2002 when the state began an investigation of Steve Winters, the owner of Health Concepts, who operated the fitness club located inside the complex. Members of the club had begun to notice the facility becoming run-down and had filed complaints with the Department of Consumer Affairs.
“The place started getting a little dirty, and they weren’t cleaning up.” One member was quoted as saying in the Star-Ledger. “But I didn’t think they were going to close the doors and run.”
But that’s exactly what happened. When members arrived at the club on April 1, 2002 they found the doors shut and it was believed that the owner had skipped out with thousands in pre-paid membership fees.
Investigators said that in the weeks prior to closing, Winters had tried to solicit new members by offering special deals to police and firefighters. According to the Ledger, “In March, the club offered all members a 10 percent discount to rejoin before April 1st.”
The health club soon reopened under new ownership with a new name, who told old members they would have to rejoin and their previous memberships would not be honored.
Years later in early May of 2003, fifty officers of the Prosecutors office and Sherrif’s Department conducted an 11 p.m. raid on the nightclub in the complex on a teen dance night after suspicions arose of illegal drug and alcohol use by minors. The raid was spurred by a three-week undercover investigation, which began after neighbors complained about the noise from the weekly teen nights.
While investigators did not find any evidence of drug or alcohol use that night, they did find the club’s assistant manager and deejay having sex with two underage patrons in the back room. The girls were 14 and 15 years old. In New Jersey it is illegal for adults to have sex with anyone under the age of 16, even with consent.
Paulo Bertolo, 22, of Newark, and Matthew Calderone, 24, of Union, also known as DJ “Matty C,” were arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault. Calderone was released after posting $125,000, while Bertolo was held on $100,000 bail.
On Thursday and Saturday nights, the club operated as an adult nightclub with a valid liquor license to serve those over 21. On Friday nights however, the club hosted parties that catered to a clientele of teenagers from 13 to 18 years old. On the evening of the Friday night raid, there were 196 teens in attendance, some as young as 12.
Officers interviewed the youngsters until 1:30 a.m. to see if there were any additional victims, before releasing them into the custody of a parent or guardian.
The website for the complex promoted the club as a racy hotspot for people over 21. Images on the page included provocatively posed photos of scantily clad women, and the nightclub’s logo with a pair of lips that says, “So bad you can taste it.”
Police director and business administrator Jack Sayers was quoted in the Star-Ledger as saying, “The alleged conduct that occurred here is outrageous and will not be tolerated in this community. The township is devoting all of its resources to this investigation to ensure the health, welfare, and safety of everybody’s children is protected.”
Club owner Jerry Turco, who was on the premises on the night of the raid attending a private birthday party, was not charged with any crime. But he was cited for numerous municipal code violations by town inspectors. He is said to have been a “habitual offender” since 1997 with thousands of dollars of violations for disabling fire safety systems, employing uncertified lifeguards, maintaining improperly chlorinated swimming pools and unsanitary dishwashers.
The club was immediately shut down after the raid for fire and health code violations including blocked exits and employees with criminal backgrounds severing alcohol. By the end of that weekend, the entire complex was shut down for dozens of additional violations that inspectors found, including expired safety permits for the play area with the carousel and rock climbing wall.
All ten businesses that operated out of the leased space in the facility were closed, including the gym.
Jerry Turco faced fines of over $100,000 and said he felt the town was harassing him by not allowing him to reopen at least the health and fitness club. Problems got worse when days later, dozens more underage girls stepped forward with claims of having sex with employees at the club.
More charges were filed against the deejay Matthew Calderone including witness tampering as authorities said many of the girls being interviewed by police appeared to have been “coached” not to cooperate with the investigation, saying “it looks like someone else is telling them what to say.”
Two years after the raid, Calderone and Bertolo pleaded guilty.
The facility eventually did reopen, but its days were numbered. The complex shut down for good in 2005 after the death of the owner Jerry Turco.
Today, the building “is declared unsafe for human occupancy. No individual is to occupy this building until the structure is rendered safe and secure.”
Kind of surprised nobody took all the metal still left in the building after 6-7 years.

Why would a place like that still have lights on? You'd think it wouldn't even have power running to it.

Unless those weren't lights and were holes in the ceiling (2:35).

Cool stuff as always.
It's sad, really.
This mega-large facility had the potential to be absolutely awesome, but due to incompetence and greed it's now a run-down shithole.
If we had something like this here in town I'm sure it'd be a completely successful business.

Regardless, excellent video as always!
Awesome video! How do all these places get so badly fucked up though? Do people just go in and smash everything up?
yup. the world is filled with moronic assholes.

Pretty much, just a couple days ago an abandoned factory in Carlisle, PA was burned down that the fair grounds was gonna use for their car show.
Luckily no one was hurt in the Carlisle fire. Firefighters go and die for stupid shit like this because of dumb ignorant people. In Detroit they don't put out the fire anymore if its an abandoned building. It's not the worth the money, time, effort, and risk if they are not saving anyone. The building is just going to get demolished anyway, which is expensive, may as well let the fire do it for free. Sucks, but I don't blame them.

I live near Detroit.
They do try to put out the fire, it's just usually there's 3 or 4 fires happening at once to multiple buildings so they scramble around.
yeah, that too. i'm just going off this article i read http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/Detroit-fire-boss-Let-some-vacant-buildings-burn/-/1719418/11537346/-/ocxal0z/-/index.html video too.
Oh god that ball pit does not look like fun to jump in.
Why does it sound like someone's sharpening a knife all the time
I always feel like a screamer is going to pop up in these kind of videos.
yeah, that too. i'm just going off this article i read http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/Detroit-fire-boss-Let-some-vacant-buildings-burn/-/1719418/11537346/-/ocxal0z/-/index.html video too.
The main argument is if another fire is going on, why try to save the 2nd or 3rd fire if it's an abandoned building. Still, it is dumb with all the arsonists and shit.
Why does it sound like someone's sharpening a knife all the time
The auto focus on the camera.
"ziemlich viel, ob sie diese lesen können, sie SAUGEN"
That's actually pretty funny. In English, it's "Pretty much if anyone can read this, they SUCK".
Arsonists are the natural enemy of Urbanexors.
Shame a Facility like that had such terrible owners and staff. I think a facility like that could have been quite successful. Sounds like a place I would hang out lol.
Anyway, subscribed I love this type of stuff
