El Reg readers of a more fatalistic disposition may be dismayed, but probably not surprised, to hear that Cyberdyne - the company that invented Skynet and ultimately the murderous "Terminator" machines - has just listed on the Tokyo stock exchange.
No, this one is a maker of exoskeleton “suits” and supports designed to help those with serious muscular, nerve or cerebral damage recover movement. The Ibaraki-headquartered start-up opened in Tokyo at double its pre-market price of ¥3,700 (£22) per share, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Well, I guess that's that...

I can already see it. The suits will revolt, break the necks of their patients, and begin the world takeover, with the bodies of their former patients hanging out of them like some kind of a grotesque zombie.
the viral marketing begins
Well, I just hope I get killed by the one that looks like Summer Glau.
The exosuits just so happen to be named HAL
the HAL exosuit is kickass, it actually moves based on brainwaves, so you have to let your brain learn to send the right signals for the right motions, technically learning to walk for the first time again. This could lead straight into complete cybernetic replacement limbs

Isn't this the company where the boss has a NeXTstation on his desk?
Edited: yeah, that was the place.

I always wondered as a kid if you gave somebody a tail or something if the brain had the ability to make it move or if it just didn't have a slot for extra limbs in the motor control part. It's cool to see that answered today.

they mentioned in the HAL thing that your brain figures it out. I'd say the exoskeleton would apply under this 'new limb' idea, your brain will send out signals and pay attention to feedback, interpreting things as you confirm whether or not a function did what you want it to.

I still liked the way the Hardiman exoskeleton looked, personally.
