122mph wind hits Britain - 2 dead, 10,000 without power

A taxi driver has died after being hit by falling masonry in a seaside town this afternoon during windy conditions that are wreaking havoc in Britain.
Hurricane-force winds of up to 122mph and driving rain caused chaos on the roads and railways today, ruining journeys for thousands of commuters.
Separately, a motorcyclist was also killed near Reading, Berkshire, when he collided with a tractor on a leaf-strewn A4074 country lane.

Yeah it's been pretty rainy and windy today, nothing serious where I am though.
Blimey, so that's why it was so blustery this afternoon...

How cool is that?
I thought it was a bit blowy out.
And I thought the 110km/h winds we had here in Adelaide today were bad...
Gale force winds are newer fun. Though surely truck and lorry drivers were notified of the winds before they set out? By law any trucks or lorries have to be removed from the roads whenever winds start hitting 120 km/h+ here.
It was really windy in Edinburgh a few days ago, my big metal bin got pushed over by it but It's not felt too windy today.
We're getting straight-line tornado force winds here in Texas that are ripping the roofs off of buildings and blowing down radio masts. It's crazy.
It was a bit brisk today, didn't know it was that bad, though. Weird, it was really sunny and mild yesterday.

Curtain siders terrify me when I pass them on a windy day on the motorway because they turn into kites and start to wobble and weave as the curtain catches the wind.
Hang tight Britbros
I hate driving in the rain when its proper pissing it down and esp when you have huge ass puddles on the side of the road

I can imagine that would cause a lot of damage, deliveries being late, companies losing money, drivers losing a day's pay. They can drive in any weather but there will be diversions in place where it isn't safe for them to drive, such as across bridges. But they're limited to 60mph anyway, it's the cars and vans that speed past without thinking
Lost power for two hours this morning :(
When I used to live up north, we'd get winds upwards of 80mph a lot, sometimes gusting at 100, and trucks on the main highways would blow over all the time. The ones carrying the blades for the giant windmills out on the plains here were most susceptible to it, you'd see them dumped off the side of the road or all over the highway all the time. Very dangerous to be driving in.
Stay safe guys
Here in south cali, i used to live in a place that was most effected by the santa ana's. we'd get winds in excess of 120MPH, about 6 or 7 times a year. unless the houses are built to withstand those, you're going to have a bad time.
Last year we had one of the greatest wind storms in 20 years, and it caused us to actually get out of class, partially because trees were collapsing onto buildings, and also quite literally exploding into splinters because the wind was so strong. the entire city had no power for six hours, and it took another two days for the end of the storm.

Like every house here in the UK is made of bricks so we'll be good.
Had to cycle against this. No, my calves did not survive.
10,000 without power? that is some serious shit. Tons of people will be without heat (outside of the ones that make a fire pit or have gas stoves)
Woke up, saw all the trains were cancelled, went strait back to bed. Thankfully nothing bad happened here, just a lot of grumbling inconvenience.

It's not that cold, it's 10c outside and 20c inside where I am and I have the heating off, houses are well insulated here

Winter is coming, but it doesn't mean we can build a wall to the north with all those frozen ice everywhere (Which we have none : /)
It's been mostly calm and clear here in south Wales
I'm fed up of this weather. I will fight it with my bare hands to make it stop.
[editline]6th October 2014[/editline]
Was dreadful earlier on in the south east. I got fucking splashed about 6 or 7 times by cars driving through massive puddles on my way home.
pfffft 120mph that's nothing compared to what we get in America man up pussies
120mph thats nothing pff in Iceland you get 40000mph winds.
Nothing that bad here in nottinghamshire, just cold and wet. really misty at the moment.
I live near Reading, I have no idea why I didn't hear about any of this
