"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled slides," the company's statement reads
More than 1,000 playground slides have been recalled by a Pennsylvania-based company after two children had their fingers amputated by broken equipment.
A statement on the website of playground equipment provider Playworld Systems says that “around 1,300” stainless steel slides have been recalled after 13 broke, leading to injuries including the two children whose fingers were cut off.
“The weld between the slide bedway and sidewall can crack and separate. A child’s fingers can get caught in the space, posing an amputation hazard,” the statement reads. “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled slides and contact Playworld for a free replacement slide and free installation." The fuck kinda welds were they using?
The cheap kind I assume.
hey i used to think about this kinda shit when i slid on slides
The fuck kinda welds were they using?
Spot welds, I would assume.
Jesus that is some scary shit. I can't imagine what it would be like just taking your kid to the park to have a good time, only for them to get lacerations deep enough to cut their fingers off or in need of amputation.

I cringed really hard seeing this. NOW I understand how a slide could cause amputation
Builds character.

Ooh, yeah, I can see how that can end up having the slide painted a delightful shade of red.
Pfft, back in my day play places were wooden monstrosities held together with hornets. No forgiving recycled rubber padded floors, what's a few fingers here and there?
That's atrocious build quality though if those welds would come apart like that. You think they'd just run a bead down the entire run just for the longevity.
Why would you make them out of stainless steel? Why not plastic?
Longer lasting. Plastic ones tend to crack and break through the hard thaw cycles that a lot of the US sees. After 20 years a plastic slide is going to really need replaced. I've seen stainless slides that have been in use for 60 years and longer at some parks here.
Isn't this why they're usually rounded? Having sides welded on sounds good in theory but just presents huge obvious flaws like this one

This is absolutely horrifying. Like sliding down a deli meat slicer.
Wouldn't it make more sense from a design and cost point to just bend a single sheet of stainless steel into a halfpipe shape rather than welding multiple pieces into a rectangular shape?

a full bead is obscenely expensive compared to just a couple of tack welds.
Jesus fucking Christ that picture makes my fingers hurt.

design yeah, cost not so much. the tooling to stamp out a big piece of stainless steel would be obscenely expensive compared to just rolling the lip and welding it all together. I don't think they have the sales volume for one specific slide design to justify spending millions of dollars on hydroforming equipment of that scale just to have a slide design that can't be height adjusted to suit the application.

So they can either pay 1 machine operator like $12 an hour to position slides in a jig and do the spot welding which involves clamping electrodes down and pressing a button for a few seconds or they can pay a welder $20 an hour to lay down a solid bead and take probably at least 15 minutes per slide plus filler wire and shielding gas. That's why they don't "just run a bead down the entire run."
wtf see this is the shit you get trying to pinch pennies. press that shit out of 1 piece of metal and you'd never have a problem of the bottom and sides seperating
i guess the high sides might make it difficult to press into shape, idk why they didnt just go plastic honestly

Weird, pretty much every slide up here in Eastern Canada (cold as shit) is plastic. I don't think I've ever even seen a metal slide before.
Granted, the plastic is thick as shit, way thicker than that metal slide.
Another fine product from the company's catalogue -

Seriously though fuck that's horrible

That design would require larger sheets of raw material (more expensive) and either multiple machines for different designs or heat treating and then bending on a jig to suit the needs of the order. Much cheaper to just have 3 smaller strips that are individually bent into shape and spot welded together.

Sure, and end up with a slide that costs 3x as much.

are you for real
how is this allowed
Those stainless steel slides suck ass anyway, if they're in direct sunlight for too long they get hotter than the surface of venus ffs.
Wow, it's actually amazing how they managed to fuck this up
they had no idea what they we're doing

Now i have to return the question to you.

More likely that they had either an operator error, a bad batch of material, or a faulty welder.

and also cost -2 fingers

touche, still a major fuck up
“The weld between the slide bedway and sidewall can crack and separate. A child’s fingers can get caught in the space, posing an amputation hazard"
jesus. i expected it to be something else entirely, like the ladder or something. maybe it's just me, but it seems like with these cases, it's always a secondary function that gets overlooked, i guess by virtue of being secondary. the fact that it's in the actual slide makes it so much more terrifying
are you for real

its not illegal to photoshop
