Democrats handed President Barack Obama an embarrassing defeat on his trade agenda, blocking final passage of fast-track negotiating authority just hours after he made a rare visit to Capitol Hill to seek their support. In a 126-302 vote Friday, Democrats helped reject a displaced workers’ aid program they usually support that was needed to proceed to a final vote on fast-track authority. The House then quickly voted for the fast-track measure, 219-211, though it won’t go to Obama’s desk unless the worker aid bill also passes. The House plans to vote again on the aid measure Tuesday. Passage would send the trade package to Obama. ... Obama’s administration -- and the president personally -- lobbied for months for expedited trade negotiating authority, saying it is needed to advance trade agreements that will keep the U.S. competitive with overseas rivals. Obama is seeking to complete a 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership. Only 40 Democrats voted for the aid bill minutes after Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced her opposition in a dramatic speech, while 144 voted no. There's already a theory floating around that Obama supported it just so the Republicans would hate it but thankfully the Democrats didn't seem to care much for it either. :v:

It benefits huge corporations, and even Republican figures have come out in support of it.
Transparency might have saved this thing but its literally eyes only for senators and congressmen so nobody on the hill actually knows if its good or bad, I understand the need for some secrecy regarding the negotiations but its so opaque that nobody can know its effects here, while the EU basically published their half of the Atlantic trade deal while our half is top secret
Except Republicans actually want it? It benefits huge corporations, and even Republican figures have come out in support of it.
i guess the theory hinges on republicans hating obama more than they love money
i guess the theory hinges on republicans hating obama more than they love money
can confirm I can never decide between the two
i guess the theory hinges on republicans hating obama more than they love money
i think the house is more likely to appeal to their constituency than the senate, as senators have to answer to their state's voters as opposed to a congressman that has to appeal to one small block of voters, plus congressmen usually get less investments from lobbiests than senators because their races aren't usually that contested
