• Israel quietly watches Egyptian turmoil
Jerusalem (CNN) -- Israel was silent Friday as a week of massive street protests engulfed the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian cities. Neither officials from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office nor the Israeli foreign ministry offered any public comment on the growing political instability in Israel's most important regional ally . After the first day of Cairo street protests on Tuesday, Israeli Knesset member Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, known as the Israeli politician with the closest ties to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, told Israeli Army Radio that he did not believe the demonstrations would bring down the regime for lack of a viable leadership in the opposition. "There is no leading figure that can lead the wave of protests till the regime falls," he said. "This is not a regime of one person, but it is backed by the army, the intelligence agencies and the secret service.".It was an assessment shared by more than a few Israeli analysts and government officials, but by Friday night, underscoring just how rapidly events were moving, Arab affairs analysts for the two major Israeli television networks were talking about the possibility of Mubarak being forced from power. While the relationship between Israel and Egypt is frequently described as a "cold peace," the two countries maintain significant intelligence and security ties. In addition to its role as facilitator in on-and-off-again talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians, Egypt shares a number of mutual interests with Israel, including curbing the influence of Iran in both Lebanon and Gaza. The two countries signed a historic peace agreement in 1979, and during his 28 years in office, Mubarak has worked with eight Israeli prime ministers. A++ post. In all seriousness Israel has no good reason to try and intervene.
Good, Israel isn't intervening in something they shouldn't.
To be honest, what else are they supposed to do? They nearly had a fiasco making that 'Security apparatus' comment a while ago.
It's like Israel is sitting down, watching Egypt burn eating popcorn like it's a show lol.
It's like Israel is sitting down, watching Egypt burn eating popcorn like it's a show lol.
Yeah man that's totally what it's like man [editline]30th January 2011[/editline] man
I hope you guys know that Egypt is next to Israel and there is pretty much anarchy in Egypt now. A lot of extremists are out of jail to, might as well be some nutjob that rises to power with bad intention. I would worry, but for the moments just watch the awesome videos about current events.
A++ post. In all seriousness Israel has no good reason to try and intervene.
It should try and restore order in the country.
It should try and restore order in the country.
That way everybody on this forum can say Israel is trying to build an empire.
It should try and restore order in the country.
Why? Egypt has a fully functioning military. It just supports the protesters. If Israel tried to bring in forces to calm the population, Egypt's military (as well as civilians) would fight back.
Why? Egypt has a fully functioning military. It just supports the protesters. If Israel tried to bring in forces to calm the population, Egypt's military (as well as civilians) would fight back.
Not to mention Israel would look like a complete dick again.
It should try and restore order in the country.
Israel should seriously just stay away from this one.
Not to mention Israel would look like a complete dick again.
Bitch please, Israel always a dick, it's like it has viagra for breakfast everyday.
Bitch please, Israel always a dick, it's like it has viagra for breakfast everyday.
erryday :eng101:
Good, Israel isn't intervening in something they shouldn't.
I heard they just sent planes carrying cargo of weapons for the government to use against the protesters.
I heard they just sent planes carrying cargo of weapons for the government to use against the protesters.
Good.
Good.
You're an idiot.
You're an idiot.
You might wish to take back that statement in several years if the Egyptian government falls.
You might wish to take back that statement in several years if the Egyptian government falls.
You mean just like how the current dictator-like one failed??
You mean just like how the current dictator-like one failed??
The current dictator is weak for being unable to control his people.
The current dictator is weak for being unable to control his people.
Or the people is too strong to be controlled by a dictator with a warped sense of reality and human rights.
The current dictator is weak for being unable to control his people.
You're an idiot for being unable to control your idiocy.
The current dictator is weak for being unable to control his people.
or that millions and millions of pissed off, angry, fed up people can make a change?
or that millions and millions of pissed off, angry, fed up people can make a change?
He was weak for not controlling them effectively. If he knew how to actually keep the population placated there wouldn't be this trouble. Though also it has been influenced by the recent revolutions.
Why? Egypt has a fully functioning military. It just supports the protesters.
Really? Since when? Last I heard the Egyptian military was doing crowd control.
I like this ElBaradei guy if he can turn Egypt into a fully working democracy, give him a Nobel peace price. This is starting to look good even in my eyes! I'm very pleased with the amazing videos that made it out of Egypt.
He already got the Nobel Peace Prize IIRC.
Give him another one
Israel's probably shitting itself thinking that this rebellion might spread...
