Sometimes it helps to take look the world through an unconventional perspective when thinking about the size of things.
So here’s a pretty awesome map from Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Chief Investment Strategist Michael Hartnett that shows the world according to free-float equity market capitalization in billions of dollars measured by the MSCI.
The US, with a market cap of $19.8 trillion, is the biggest and represents 52% of the world’s market cap. Japan is in second place at $3 trillion, followed by the UK at $2.7 trillion, and then France at $1.3 trillion.
Notably, Hong Kong’s market cap is nearly the same size of China (both of which are significantly smaller than countries like the US and Japan).
Meanwhile, Russia, which has a bigger surface area than Pluto, is about the same size as Finland in terms of market cap.
Now this is a world the west can get behind
Russia looks adorable :3!
Weirdly enough this also looks like a map of each country's size relative to their cultural affect through media on the rest of the world. US has Hollywood (among a lot of other things), UK has the BBC, Japan has their huge amount of anime and manga, and those three are the biggest countries on the map.

Well russia has dashcam videos so
As an American I approve of this map

And Canada is a fine hat as they should be
This is a map of how rich AND reliant on an open economy each country is...
I detest the idea of stock markets though. Still, its funny to see our little Denmark outsize russia.

I don't think Anime and Manga have as much an effect on world culture as you'd like to believe.
Holy shit, Switzerland will grow larger
I like how poland is only three times smaller then russia
who's stronk now

Have you seen what people are willing to do to smuggle it? North Korea has a massive black market for anime even when the punishment for getting caught with it is severe, same with China before they decriminalized it. Even though it never was illegal here in the US people still had to bring tapes and special vcrs from overseas to just watch it in Japanese without English subtitles

Considering that your average Japanese adult doesnt watch Anime...nah. It's like watching cartoons past a certain age, it's becoming more socially acceptable for adults to watch it (adventure time etc.) but still you won't find the majority doing it. It's like kid stuff I guess.
haha Russia are you even trying?

On the contrary, I don't think you realize just how sought after it is outside Japan. Just because you don't have anime billboards in Times Square doesn't mean anything. The whole world watches anime.

Nah man it's clearly animes and mangas that are the driving force, not their electronics or automotive industries or any of that other lame shit.
Unless you're just anti free market it's a bit silly to hate the stock markets themselves... you'd do better to aim your distaste at high-frequency trading or over speculation rather than what's just a way for people to obtain capital
I can totally see why we have it, goes with the territory of currency, wich helps us put concrete worth on subjective value. However the fact that concrete value can be reduced to nothing by a haphazard trade-fluctuation, and the fact that the citizens of entire nations can have their standards of living reduced significantly by the sketchy financial gambling of just a few affluent market-players is totally fucked in my view. And should be tightly regulated for the good of all.
So The Netherlands stayed the same size, that's just funny.
It's pretty impressive that Canada is as big as a lot of European nations considering it has the fraction of the population.

Haha, Hong Kong and Singapore are enormous compared to their usual size. Makes me somewhat proud.
Why is Australia almost as large as China?!

The real industry driving Japan is the 300 year old high school girls in Sailor uniforms fighting fairy demons and monsters with squeaky voices.
Why is Australia almost as large as China?!
because your economy is mostly exporting stuff to china, which is kind of why if china's economy does bad austrailias will be the #1 most affected

well anime is basically the japanese equivalent of hollywood and some of our networks, its a much more integrated industry with the same that make anime making effects for movies, making shows for TV, and producing their own movies. its really an interesting industry compared to the US

I believe the Toronto stock exchange has the most mining and oil companies registered or whatever it is.
Holy shit, Switzerland will grow larger
Woah Singapore is huge

Who the fuck likes Japanese porn?
[sp] I mean I d-do, but..... [/sp]
Honestly didn't expect Japan to be that large, or China to be that small. Though I suppose it makes sense, since this is a map of free market trade rather than GDP.
I like how Hong Kong, a tiny little island/peninsula nation on the coast of China has about the same stock market size as mainland China.
