• 1 in 30 £1 coins are now fake

Bank of England bosses have admitted they believe there are almost 50 million fake £1 coins in the nation's pockets. Experts now believe that almost one in every thirty pound coins is a fake with around half of these counterfeit coins good enough to fool vending machine and automated tills. In the last five years a total of nine million £1 coins have been detected and withdrawn by the Treasury. The Royal Mint has produced this guide on how to spot a fake: The date and design on the reverse do not match (the reverse design is changed each year) The lettering or inscription on the edge of the coin does not correspond to the right year The milled edge is poorly defined and the lettering is uneven in depth, spacing or is poorly formed The obverse and reverse designs are not as sharp or well defined Where the coin should have been in circulation for some time, the colouring appears more shiny and golden and the coin shows no sign of age The colour of the coin does not match genuine coins The orientation of the obverse and reverse designs is not in line
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2918703/How-fake-1-coins-purse-Bank-England-chiefs-admit-currently-50-million-fakes-circulation-s-one-thirty-fool-vending-machines.html
New £1 coin looks pretty dope
Wait that new coin isn't going to match the sequence of coins now :( 1p and 2p are copper and round 5p and 10p are silver and round 20p and 50p are silver and 7 sided £1 and £2 are gold and round (I'm aware they're not gold/copper/silver etc) Each have their respective size depending on their value, 1p is smaller than 2p etc etc Now everything is RUINED
I remember a few years back hearing a big fuss around clipped coins and seeing a couple myself. Never imagined it was such a big problem though.
Coins are meant to be objects of constant width so I don't think that mock up is massively accurate.
Now everything is RUINED
The 0.50 Euro cent coin is bigger than 1 Euro in size, how annoying is that.
Now if the coins were made from materials that matched their true value like they used to be, it would not be a problem. Other than running out of that natural resource.
The 0.50 Euro cent coin is bigger than 1 Euro in size, how annoying is that.
5 cent is bigger than 10 cent too. I hate whoever designed the Euro coin sizes..
The 0.50 Euro cent coin is bigger than 1 Euro in size, how annoying is that.
the 2p coin is bigger than the pound coin so
the 2p coin is bigger than the pound coin so
and the 5p is the smallest coin
Fucking American coins are all over the place in size.
The reason fr coins to be made different sizes and material (to account for weight) is to help blind people take change out of tier pocket. It;s why all our cons are grouped into very distinct patterns, its almost impossible to pull a 2p coin rather than a 50p coin due to their different shapes. Changing the pound coin would not really help in this regard and people would have to get used to it.

That coin doesn't have enough polygons. This is 2015, our reality should be next-gen in visuals, already.

Shouldn't a circulating coin be round?
You guys are so fucking lucky. I wish $1 coins were a bigger thing here. [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/95/2014_Native_American_Coin.png[/t] This and presidential(and 1st lady!) dollars are so fucking awesome. They make the value of one dollar feel so much more important and powerful.

Theres a reason we dropped the £1 note and other countries dropped their #1 notes too for #1 coins. US just comes across as a bit backwards with some things at times.

If all you got are paper bills it's much easier to store
i hate having a ton of pound coins
-snip, completely wrong thread

Never understood why we had a smaller 2 dollar coin.
So if a new pound coin is introduced isn't that going to break every vending machine ever? Unless it has the same dimensions and weight, in which case, why bother making a new one in the first place I like my fucking fanta, the treasury better not screw this up

The best dollar is the cheapest dollar. I don't think we've even changed the design in 30 years. Edited: I forgot we started changing the alloy the coins are stamped with about three years ago (and vending machines LOVED that) but still, the coins have not changed since their introduction.
