I've seen it with a few of the medium-sized channel I've been watching, like Nostalgia critic, Angry Joe, H3H3 and etc. I'm sure most of them really hate doing that crap, since they've started making videos for fun, for their viewers, and could get paid without having to bend over some companies. It doesn't help that AVGN generally has foul language and "Violent" content, which means that they'll generally be flagged for demonitizations for most ad-friendly content. Not only that, but his channel focuses on throwing shit at terrible, awful games, so having to sponsor one has to be pretty soul crushing, but if it means more content for his viewers, I think AVGN was glad to do it none the less.

does anyone else think the digital special effects look really bad for someone that's been doing this for 11 years?

I think most people would agree to it too since he deserves one.

He's still the guy taking care of like 90% of his videos with Mike giving him a hand sometimes. If you've seen his movie, he's just all about clever practical effects (from his love of early 1900's movies) and "so bad it's funny" CGI. He's gotten quite good at it, and has done some remarkable high effort work in some of his videos. When they look corny or stupid, that's mostly part of the joke. The high effort CGI that looks good you often won't notice, like removing things from the background or blending them in the picture. He did so for one of his episode where he had to act in scenes that were filmed in his old house, because obviously he couldn't film there anymore.
