• Swedish man is fined $650,000 for uploading a single movie
Sure, it's no Somalia, but Sweden's been fighting plenty of its own battles against piracy -- of the digital variety. The former home of Pirate Bay, the infamous online repository for everything the RIAA and MPAA stand against, has just fined an unnamed 28-year-old man 4.3 million krona (about $650,000) for uploading a single film to a torrent site.
Source I don't believe he'll ever pay that fine, but still, this is fucking ridiculous. [del]Apparently the movie was R.I.P.D. as well, so this fine is probably more than what the movie made at the box office in Sweden.[/del] Apparently not, according to Mooe94.
I'd love to know how they calculated that amount.
I'd love to know how they calculated that amount.
Whatever that new bently costs perhaps.
Goes to show that there is ALWAYS a risk (not saying that it's wrong though)
as far as I'm concerned, you should only pay for the price of the movie in stores plus the monetary value of what you uploaded (ex. half the movie worth of data loaded is 50 percent of movie in store). It's not your problem if someone else chooses to upload...
I'd love to know how they calculated that amount.
Pulled straight from the ass. There is no way of calculating how much, if any, money is lost due to piracy.
Yeah, let's ruin this guys life. This will prove a point and make people love us enough to buy our movies, right?
Yeah our government isn't corrupted at all. Gotta protect those movie stars and their 7 digit monthly income.
as far as I'm concerned, you should only pay for the price of the movie in stores plus the monetary value of what you uploaded (ex. half the movie worth of data loaded is 50 percent of movie in store). If the punishment for piracy is just "pay me what you would have paid if you bought it", then nobody wins
I'd love to know how they calculated that amount.
The cost of a license to distribute the movie for free.
I have never understood these insane amounts. I can understand you will get fined something, but holy hell.
Film studio Nordisk Film AS - which owns the rights to the title the man uploaded - calculated what it felt was the financial loss of it being shared illegally online. It had asked for double the awarded amount.
Money-grubbing fucks. This is the main reason why people pirate. They don't want to give money to avaricious cunts who ruin peoples' lives for money that's chump change to them. They're not even gonna get the money anyway, I doubt the dude will make that much ever.

Makes sense though. A company isn't going to pass up such easy money if the law allows them to take it.
Yeah our government isn't corrupted at all. Gotta protect those movie stars and their 7 digit monthly income.
Like movie stars/musicians get anything out of this kind of lawsuits.
The moral of the story, never download shitty movies.
I'd love to know how they calculated that amount.
They start with some base number then toss on the number of downloads they think the film will get in a period of time and charge some arbitrary amount per download. Then add fines and penalties and penalties on fines. Then add lawyer fees and other crap.
According to the article, the guy also uploaded 517 other films, and received suspended jail-time and 160 hours community service, which makes a lot more sense to me than slapping him with a $650,000 fine that he hasn't a prayer to pay off.
i find it fitting the movie he ripped and uploaded is called R.I.P.D. aswell [editline]18th December 2013[/editline]
According to the article, the guy also uploaded 517 other films, and received suspended jail-time and 160 hours community service, which makes a lot more sense to me than slapping him with a $650,000 fine that he hasn't a prayer to pay off.
yeah and the $650k fine was just for the single movie, not for the other offenses, as far as i know anyway

I agree though, if you "steal" a copy of a film or something and get caught the most you should pay is whatever you have stolen. Not some insane price, like over half a million dollars.
actually what the fuck, i have no idea where the article got R.I.P.D. from; the uploader was sentenced to that fine for uploading that Beck movie (Beck - levande begravd), not RIPD.

I mean come on over 500 fucking movies.

That movie is like, 3 years old. They should be glad that someone wants to see it
justice has been served
Levande begravd? That movie is like, 3 years old. They should be glad that someone wants to see it
the case is dated way back to 2010, when the film was released. (He released a cam version etc) And he was sentenced this year [editline]20th December 2013[/editline]
if this is the case he deserves it. I mean come on over 500 fucking movies.
also worth noting most of those he only downloaded and kept seeding, I think. so not all 517 movies were ripped/cammed But, once again, he was fined for Beck - Levande Begravd only, as far as i know.
It should be illegal to fine someone an outrageous amount like this.
Except if they're an incredibly rich guy who fucked up.
A bit old, but very related
Really as if this is going to deter pirates in the slightest, if anything it promotes piracy, fuck supporting an industry that thinks fining someone 650k is a good idea.
