Court rules Michelle Carter to stand trial for involuntary manslaughter
A teenager who sent her boyfriend dozens of text messages encouraging him to take his own life and told him to "get back in" a truck filled with carbon monoxide fumes must stand trial for involuntary manslaughter, the state's highest court ruled Friday.
The Supreme Judicial Court ruled Friday that a grand jury had probable cause to indict Michelle Carter, then 17, in the 2014 death of Carter Roy III, 18.
Carter's lawyer had argued that her texts were free speech protected by the First Amendment and didn't cause Roy to kill himself.
In addition to the text messages, prosecutors focused on a phone conversation Carter had with Roy while he was in his truck inhaling carbon monoxide fumes. Prosecutors said Carter sent a text to one of her friends after Roy's death and told her that while she was on the phone with Roy, he got out of his truck because he became frightened. She said she told him to "get back in."
wow what fucking person would tell someone to continue to kill themselves jesus christ
She practically killed him so it's good to see she's at least being charged with something. All around it's a pretty fucked up situation.
I'm sure someone is going to come on here and explain how involuntary manslaughter is too high an accusation, and how legally she only deserves a slap on the wrist at best.
And that's fine, you know, whatever.
But I still hope she really gets it for this.
What a nutcase. How awful for that guys family :(
Involuntary manslaughter? Willfully talking someone off the edge should be considered murder in the first degree.
What a fucking bitch.
Disgusting sociopath of a woman should be thrown in a cell, but watch as people support her and claim she's the victim here.

pushing someone to suicide knowingly seems fairly voluntary to me, as well
exploiting someone's fragile state of mind to pressure them into killing themselves should 100% be considered murder
Oh hey yeah I remember the thread on this years ago.
What a bitch.
