• What should I know about getting a new puppy?

This Christmas season we're going to adopt a german shepherd puppy at the local animal shelter. I'm going to be the main person to take care of him. So far we have a water bowl and food for the dog. We're going to the store to get toys, a leash, a collar, a bed to sleep on, and treats for the dog. Are there any other supplies I need or may be forgeting? Also, if you own a dog, are there any helpful tips you would like to say to a first time owner? Any help would be great.
Don't punish the puppy for things you don't see him commit. They can't connect two and two and will think you're just abusing them.
Be prepared to get frustrated as fuck as you try to house-train him. play with him often He will chew anything as he gets older. Don't worry, he'll most likely grow out of it. [editline]17th December 2010[/editline]
Don't punish the puppy for things you don't see him commit. Check your fence for large cracks/spots that it can get through into other yards.
I'm a silly head.
What kind of puppy is it by the way?
OP said its a german shepherd

If it hasn't gone through it yet, it WILL shit out mass amounts of worms for a little while. Be prepared. I'm not even joking.

GET YOUR DOG VACCINATED! Seriously, my dads dumb and doesn't "believe" in it so now I'm staying up 3 days straight feeding my puppy with a syringe for water and hoping he eats a little meat, all because he has parvo because he didn't get vaccinated. To top it all off the doctor said its a 40-50% pull through rate. So unless you want to bawl your eyes out get it vaccinated!
Basically what Relaxin said, we got a puppy once and i had parvo, we put her down tho.

If it's a male, prepare for it pissing everywhere, regardless of house training. It will want to mark it's "territory" in case of other dogs. Keep cords and various wires out of the way, and make sure there's no places it can jump and knock things over. Good luck!
As a puppy, take it to as many of your friends as possible, so it gets to know people. Never, ever, ever let a German shepard be only attached to you. That's a mistake my brother made when I went to visit him, I've got a scar front the stitches in my arm.
get lots of newspaper to line the floors with, as others have said your dog will piss EVERYWHERE so at least this way it's easy to clean up.
Also - if you catch it biting stuff, that means go and take it for walks often. Take it for a walk 1 - 2 times a week and you won't come home to a destroyed house.
Doesn't worm tablets stop that? [editline]18th December 2010[/editline] twice a day not a week
I'm tired, day was what I meant. I always take my 2 dogs out for a walk at 6:30am and at 5:00pm

I hope he makes it through this. He keeps nearly spewing. But he ate some meat and has been walking around a bit which is good.
Don't ever hit him. Find alternative punishments
I'm tired, day was what I meant. I always take my 2 dogs out for a walk at 6:30am and at 5:00pm
That's great. The best idea is to take it out first thing in the morning before it even eats, then feed it right away when you get in. That's what they would do in the wild, wake up, go hunt, eat. Usually if this is the only thing you do besides keeping a cool head you'll still have a well-balanced dog.
It's going to die one day, that will be one of the saddest days in your whole existence.
Also, a good punishment when he's challenging you is to turn him on his back, put your palm at the top of his chest with a few fingers stiff on his neck. It's again, the same thing they do in the wild to submit each other without using a lot of violence. And don't let him get ahead of you or cross in front of you when you're walking around with him. That means he's challenging your position as pack leader, and if he learns to do this as a puppy he'll constantly do it when he's bigger and able to pull you around. So just pull on his leash for a split second when he stops being a follower and make a tic sound or something so he understands you want something. And don't worry about him being sad that he's a follower. If he's never been alpha it won't bother him, at all. He'll be comfy knowing you're his bro.
Don't squish him like my dad the fat fuck did. We had a pup yorkshire that my dad had the bright idea to sleep with. He was FLATTENED.
