• Dragon Age DLC Generates $1 Million

Despite some controversy, the downloadable content for Dragon Age: Origins is doing generating lots of money for BioWare and EA. G4 reports that at a recent conference, EA CFO Eric Brown revealed the DLC has already brought in $1 million. "Dragon Age just launched about a week ago, it's doing very well," he said. "The game was designed at the outset to have [paid DLC] at launch, as well as through the next 12-plus months of its lifespan. We're well past one million in PDLC, so the attach rate appears pretty good." Last week a BioWare designer stepped in to defend EA against accusations of fleecing customers with the DLC model. Aside from some premium themes, the controversial "Warden's Keep" DLC is the only one not included in new copies of the game, which means it's probably the one to have generated the most revenue. The content includes a new mission, new armor and weapons, and a base of operations; but the point of contention is its storage chest, which some believe was put in to entice players who felt restricted by in-game item limitations. That was what designer George Zoeller wrote in to deny, but whether intentional or not, it seems to be getting a lot of cash out of consumers. Hahaha I thought the link was actually lemon party so I didn't click it for awhile.
Good thing that a good game is making good profit.
Good thing that a good game is making good profit.
If the DLC wasn't meant to whore money then I'm all for it. But the article implies it does.
If the game hasn't been released for very long yet how can it not be money whoring?
Now other companies will do this too damn it.
They should have an uncensoring / hot coffee / better camera angles mod for sex scenes for like $20 Breaking News: Dragon Age DLC cures national debt
You can't have launch dlc that isn't designed to make money. The whole game contains so much, that everything costs so little individually, with dlc they can get away with charging more for the content compared, and they want in on that. I don't really care, but don't lie about it..
They should have an uncensoring / hot coffee / better camera angles mod for sex scenes for like $20
Oh goody, $20 for low res dwarf sex.
Step one: Spam Digg with shitty full-page ads. Step two: Launch game. Step three: €$£ Step four: EA Games, ruin everything.
Seems that games with large amounts of Loot are going to start leaving places to store it for DLC, to entice people to buy it. IE: Crap that should be in-game, with held to make more money shortly after, AKA: Gimmick I'm pretty sure Borderlands is going to do the same thing
Oh fucking wow! That much money so fast...... Must be a pretty great game.
DLC altogether seems like a huge con to me. Cut out user made maps and ram in $10 a pop custom maps
If the DLC wasn't meant to whore money then I'm all for it. But the article implies it does.
How can you be against it? You didn't make the game and you have no claim to it whatsoever, so either you're glad that it's been made available to you or you just don't buy it, you totalitarian, moronic socialist.
Bioware deserved it.
This game is epic, got it three days ago and already got 43 hours in (only 39% complete as well). I don't care about Warden's Keep, it'd be cool to get it, but it's only like $7, so eh. The most expensive one comes with new copies ($15). This game deserves every penny it's made.
Why are people paying for a copy pasted item with different stats when there's games out there that have huge mods that add loads of new areas/items/missions for free.
Well, the devs are taking time to add more quests, gameplay, improved textures etc. even after the release. So it's like an expansion. They need to receive a paycheck for their work. Most game staff move on to another title after the first launches (with the exception of online games). The game is amazing, they deserve every penny.
bioware must be in debt as they haven't made anything since mass effect and they need money if they want to pay the devs for making the free dlc that's going to come with mass effect 2
Releasing DLC a week after the game releases, that they clearly already had sitting around and could have included in the $60 game? God damn, they ARE fleecing people. At this rate your full-price game will include nothing more than the engine and a framework for further DLC you have to pay for.

Every DLC is free on the disc that you buy through retail except for Wardens Keep. 2. There is a toolkit for players to build their own content.
Releasing DLC alongside a game is a shitty thing to do.
Rather than simply updating those games and adding more content, let's rip off the consumer by charging some large fee for a small bit of gameplay. Imagine if Valve did this with Team Fortress 2.
Somewhat unrelated, but does anyone else find that Morrigan looks like a 13 year old girl with her hood on? Games typically go gold a month before release. After this, the game content is pretty much locked, manufacturing begins, and the game begins to be shipped out to stores. They probably decided to add this in after DA:O went gold, and couldn't put it in the full game due to that. The only obvious solution is same-day DLC.
If the DLC wasn't meant to whore money then I'm all for it. But the article implies it does.
It really was. There's actually a guy in your camp who adds a quest to your list, but the quest isn't doable until you buy DLC. Shameless advertisement and it's annoying that people no longer launch games with the full game included, but it's a small piece of a 60 hour game really.
Imagine if you had to buy each campaign in Left4Dead seperately.
The difficulty is garbage in this game. Looks like it has been made for easy mode.
Look at NWN, you had the first game released than two expansion packs, I do expect at least one expansion pack later on for DA:O. Also Shale isn't in wardens keep, he's from the other DLC. But he is indeed the best character, followed by Alistair of course.
The difficulty is garbage in this game. Looks like it has been made for easy mode.
Baldur's Gate wasn't easy either.
