I love how those motion tracking suits looks like something out of tron.
and so now we finally know for certain that valve uses MoCap
So this is how valve gets that good SFM animation.

I wonder how much such a mocap setup costs in total.

Would be incredible if some company could make a motion capture suit/setup for consumers at a reasonable price.
That really would change machinima videos..

I thought they mentioned in L4D's commentary that they used MoCap for the zombies' death animations.

I was going to say, if one of valve's hardware R&D's was to do just this then it would be a game changer.
Really strange motion capture suits though. There don't appear to be the usual markers.
Either I'm out of the loop and motion capture has evolved beyond that, or what they were recording there is just reference footage which the animators recreate.

That's exactly what I was thinking. There doesn't appear to be any of the usual markers that aid computers in analyzing the actor's motion. I'm pretty sure that they took these shots as reference footage and colored certain parts of the suit so it would be easier to see how the body and limbs move in relation to each other when in action.

The SFM guy isn't online right now, but I'll try to find out.
Any HL3 hints in it?
the MoCap suit probably uses many motion, gyro, and compass sensors and then they smooth out the animations in SFM

Looked like they had stuff on their arms or some sort of wiring. Perhaps it's like a bunch of accelerometers on many points and the game binds it to bones.

I hear that using Kinect + some other software can make some pretty decent mocaps for cheap.

yeah, it'll be here in 45 seconds

it's a cameraless sensor-driven mocap system

those are the sensors

Whoa that's awesome. Affordable too! I mean, if you do animation a lot $550 must be a negotiable investment for ultra smooth and convincing character movements.
receivers are at least $2000 but yeah

um $550 is the suit without the electronics
someone should try doing a kinect setup and get that working with SFM

Zach from lit fuse worked on one where they imported kinect recored mocap.
I wish I had money, I want CS:GO so fucking bad.

I think Practical Problems did something like that

I just hope if people do this they adjust their posture to suit the character. Engineer looks weird when he isn't hunched over properly.

You can get great (and I really do mean amazing) quality mocap with two kinects.
Any HL3 hints in it?
Yes actually, HL3 icon on his computer at 23 seconds in.
Was the conductor Mike Moransky? I always figured him for a younger guy.

Any examples?

Someone already posted that one video, practical problems (although that one suffered from them not using actual props while motion capturing, so there were some awkward moments such as when the was passing the sniper rifle).
