So for a class assignment, we have to design a logo in Illustrator and animate it later in After effects

C&C pls
Damnit Jeb, we said don't stare directly at the comet!
There's way too many small details that don't meld together well for a logo.
The shape of the astronaut also doesn't look very clean.
Plus the giant, complicated icon breaks the composition by crushing that puny type.
Also the color scheme is pretty brown, you could have easily made the suit white and have much more flexibility. At the very least most people don't associate brown and the future together.

I've fixed the astronaut's helmet since. I did this in photoshop, and livetraced it in illustrator (we're allowed to do that, the point of using illustrator is more or less for vector quality in after effects). the small details (mainly the stars) are there mainly for the animation (the stars fly/fade onto the helmet as the planets and comet appear). i'm most likely going to remove the stars for the final logo

well i was trying to go for a more 'golden brownish' look that you see in older/retrofuturistic stuff. i'll make an alternate grey/white version for comparison
I'm no artist nor do I know the confines of your project (and I like the base design), but logos need to be incredibly simple both in geometric shape and color choice. That is, if it's a business-style logo. If it's just a generic emblem type deal, it's looking great.
I'd say cut the space suit (which I like the retro beige color) down to two shades. Or one. The planet down to one. Unsure about the stars and comet; or if the visor even needs that much detail. That's just my spin on it, I don't know exactly what your teacher's looking for.
I don't know what your project here is, but what you have is more of just an illustration than a logo.
If you're doing some kind of motion graphics type of project, you could animate that one how you want and then simply have it turn into a simpler logo at the end. I see commercials do that all the time.

it's really the latter. i guess calling it a 'logo' per se is a bit of a misnomer. i think it's more a 'video logo', as in something you'd see for a corporate video introduction, not really something you'd see on the side of a shuttle.

Actually, when I started out, I attempted to do it with 2 tones, but it didn't work as well as i'd liked it. 2 tones made bringing out shadow details a lot more difficult and restrictive

yep, pretty much.

here is the updated version (fixed the roundness of the helmet top)

here's the grey/white version. ignore the visor roughness, i made a layer hierarchy mistake

This one looks better but id ditch the green. Go for a dark grey and make the kosmos text white. Also it seems to have suffered some bad compression.
Oh christ that green is awful. I think the suit looks good in grey (maybe make the lightest gray a bit lighter and the middle a touch lighter too) but there's no way that background is going to fly.

The green was just there as a contrasting background. it's not gonna be in the final thing at all, don't worry. the final animation will have a black bacground/space
You seem to have some horrible jpeg compression going on there.

haha yeah well i selected imgur's 'large thumbnail', the original is massive
Honestly I dont think it works as a logo. Theres too much stuff going on and even as a drawing it isnt that good. And if thats the reflection of space in the guys helmet, then there should be some white highlight. And to top it off, the font is just horrible, makes it look completely outdated. And I dont know why the second part needs to have 2 different colors and be in italics, when the size difference already makes it clear.
Id reduce it to a very simple, down to the essentials version. And it should be a lot better. Less colors doesnt mean its more restricted. If youre printing this in small scale it will be clearer
for example, heres an old logo I made, only 1 shadow color

and if you ask me, its pretty clear

if you read the thread i said that it was more or less the base for an animated 'corporate video intro', for a retro-futuristic company
well yeah but it doesnt mean it could be better. Im just saying the things I would change, youre welcome to take it or leave it
