• Why Does Music Go With How You Are?

THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE MAY BE CONFUSING... JUST REFER TO THE TITLE IF THIS OCCURS. Why do we feel that we have to cringe when listening to certain music when people are about? I always get a sense that people are "dredding" that they have to sit there and listen to certain music when they do. This is a part of music that I can't stand... I can't let people be so down about what they can't relate to. There are very few people I know whom I can sit with and listen to music and discover new things and experience this in the similar way. This can be amazing when it happens, but it rarely does. I enjoy personally when I see people discover the joy of new music that they weren't expecting to like. What I don't like to see, is people not thinking straight and mocking others for what they listen to. This is regardless of race because the race war is over and I know it. I hate to talk about stereotyping people and that is not where I am heading in my judging people's train of thought. I find that some people can sit and chill with some music that they can relate to what is "COOL FOR THEM". I seemed to have reached a point of realisation, and it makes perfect sense. I don't feel I need to condone this, but it is a dead end. I'm still young and maybe I'm at a stage in life where this occurs a lot. When I start to meet more people who are not confined to their social conduct and more about what they want to see, then I'll get rid of this foolishness. If I want to simplify what I am trying to get across, then I can bring one major point in what I have seen. Light - Heartedness Hard-Arseness and between. I don't want to stick a few genres in each category but you pretty much know what can go where. This is probably the dumbest arguement I could bring up because I couldn't care less about it. If people can't enjoy both sides of the coin, then there isn't a thing I can do about it. This isn't also saying that "Doors' music is hardarse" and "Prince's music is light-hearted", It's a ridiculous way of putting it and I know some that can enjoy one and not the other. Both are outlandish enough, I just don't get how we can't get into both. I can't say "be open minded".. it's been going around a lot. We can go on and on, but some say a lot... but don't necessarily do much about it. I heard this sort of talk lately, "I am open to music, but I prefer the depth of (this style of music)" end of conversation really... more egotistical than openness but it proves a lot.
i didnt understand a word you just said.
Among young people, shutting out certain types of music is part of the search for social acceptance and occurs in almost all adolescents. As we get older we tend to break away from these social cliques and become more musically open My Dad, for example, used to be an out-and-out punk when he was about the age I am now (17). He listened almost exclusively to bands like The Jam and Sex Pistols, but that was because it helped him fit into one of the social cliques he found living in London. Nowadays he's a family man so doesn't need to be part of one of these groups, and this has made him a lot more open-minded about music, listening to rock, trance, and the like. I even found him listening to Opeth the other day. With the examples you posted, young people who listen to The Doors more often than not do so because it makes them feel more artistic, because they consider The Doors to be more intellectual than current music (this is also where fans of prog rock tend to stand). Those who listen to more commercial acts (a-la Prince) would think that music is all about having fun and the music they listen to doesn't need to be the next War And Peace, it just needs a good beat. When these people get older, they will realise that - for example - they want to listen to The Doors not because it makes them more "intellectual", but because their songs are enjoyable to listen to, because they no longer feel the need to be accepted into specific social groups with similar thoughts. It's all about one's mind becoming individual and free of the need to "fit in". That's my tuppence anyway.
i didnt understand a word you just said.
Read it with the words going in order from left to right. [editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
As we get older we tend to break away from these social cliques and become more musically open
We'll see as time goes on :v: This is all about people we meet in general, I hate to have music ALWAYS in my ear by myself. If I experience something great, I like other people to see it too.
You can relate to the artists lyrics, and how the music is played out.
You can relate to the artists lyrics, and how the music is played out.
I listen to a lot of jazz. I don't really "relate" to it, I just try to experience the greatness of it.
I listen to a lot of music and I scrobble it all to Last.fm and post it all on Facebook so that people know I listen to a lot of music. I'm not gonna lie, I'm totally up myself about the fact I listen to a lot more kinds of music than my friends do. I even say "It's not my kind of thing" where other people would say they don't like it. Because I don't dislike anything! I'm so eclectic! But like yeah, I do avoid listening to some stuff in public. Stuff I know most people wouldn't like. Or stuff that I got from Grey's Anatomy. My dad says I should try and get a spot at the local radio station so I can do my own show, but I get the feeling I'd struggle with that because I don't have many bands I'd feel comfortable playing on the radio. One of my friends listens to My Chemical Romance and bands like that that speak to his tortured soul. but WHY WOULD HE SHUT OUT MY WONDERFUL MUSIC I keep forcing my music on my friends. I managed to shift one of them from Skillet to full on Blind Guardian. He knows all the words to every song from At The Edge Of Time <:
I don't tend to "dominate" my friends with recommendations.. That's foolish. It takes a long while to truly see the heart of some albums. I listen to whatever I feel.
I don't tend to "dominate" my friends with recommendations.. That's foolish. It takes a long while to truly see the heart of some albums. Or as with my tortured soul friend I find music similar to My Chemical Romance and whatnot that he might like. Haven't been successful yet though. But I did get him addicted to Anamanaguchi. [editline]5th February 2011[/editline] But yeah I'm not a very good album man. I'm kind of like, listen through the album a few times and then just continue with my favourites after that.
I listen to only albums :v:
I listen to only discographies :v:
Albums as a whole tell me a lot more about what the artist wants to percieve as compared to a single.
I never listen to singles they're never as good as albums
I don't really look into my music much. I just go on how it sounds. I've never been good at analysing music. I only look at the album as a whole when they're all connected in a story or something. Rock operas and concept albums. I really do just listen to stuff in the background mostly. I listen to a lot of music but I'm not a true listener. [editline]5th February 2011[/editline] And yeah, singles are kinda meh. But b-sides <3
Am I just retarded or why can't I make any sense of the OP.
Am I just retarded or why can't I make any sense of the OP.
It's tough to get across. Can't really simplify it, it's something you will have yo read intoZ
Seriously I've read it through 5 times now and thought about every sentence but I don't understand. Are you going on about hate against a genre like pop just because it's popular and things like that? But then you start talking about light and hard music.
I'm not summing it up. It's about sociality and as you said, light and hard music going with people's personality.
Well, I think it is a part of some social aspect. We dislike music we consider bad even though we haven't even tried listening to it and sometimes we dislike a band just because it is popular. I notice I personally do the latter thing too often. But about music and personalities, music seems to go with my mood. Lately I've felt like I have too much human contact and I want to be by myself for a long time and I've started listening to some pretty gloomy and dark music.
I think I've said it in other threads... But I do listen to music that I think is bad. I've always tried to go beyond what I think I can listen to, then going back to what I've become accustomed to. :smug:

I look for whatever gives me a certain thrill. Albums are the way to go, bigger chance that the artist will thrill you if you listen to it from start to finish.
I've noticed that as I've gotten older, my musical taste has become much more focused. I am pretty picky about what music I listen to on a day to day basis, but I do try to find other artists to listen to sometimes. Even so, I usually just return to my main favourites.
I always give each album 3 hours of listening time even if I don't like and if I still don't like it I try the next day and if I don't like it after a week I forget about it. This way I don't eliminate potentional greatness and I am not stuck listening to crap.
For me, there's certain melodies and progressions that just really captivate me. I can't explain it. No matter what kind of music I'm listening to, there's certain "types" of melodies, I guess, that jump out at me. I can't explain it. I mean, I get the same feeling from Jimmy Buffet's singing in this song: As I do from the bass in this one: [editline]5th February 2011[/editline] Quite divergent.
