Stanford sophomores studying ants in a summer course discovered that the local ants were using poison to kill invading Argentine ants. The discovery provides new insight into the war between the local "winter ants" and the South American invaders who have shown up everywhere from California to South Africa.
BY LOUIS BERGERON
Argentine ants are taking over the world – or at least the nice temperate parts. They've spread into Mediterranean and subtropical climates across the globe in sugar shipments from Argentina, and no native ant species has been known to withstand their onslaught – until now. A group of Stanford University undergraduate students working on a class project have discovered that a native species, the plucky winter ant, has been using chemical warfare to combat the Argentine tide.
THE RESISTANCE BEGINS!

Wow, that's actually ridiculously cool. It's going to make a good thesis for someone, that's for sure.
Thank god they haven't developed a hivemind...
... Yet.
This ant is your FRIEND

She fights for FREEDOM
i hate ants, but they're probably the smartest bugs i'll ever squish in my entire life.
Ants are cool, they can build living ant bridges.
Ants are crazy awesome. In my lit class a bunch of them got on this shelf like thing that runs along the desks and I would just watch them everyday. The janitors didn't do anything about it so it was free entertainment.
They would gather a bunch of dust and scraps in their mouths and just walk to the edge of the shelf and just drop it. They'd do it over and over everyday. Never gets old.
i love ants they are creative little critters
When I was a kid I wanted to be a Formicologist and spend all day looking at ants.
They'll develop better chemicals and soon start killing us with them!

Bugs are nasty... but ants are cool I guess.

Some here may accept their new ant overlords.
Ant news:
The Winter Ant President has signed a bill to allow chemical warfare against the Argentine Ant invaders. "We must go to the extremes to protect our ant brothers and sisters, the Ant president said in a interview yesterday".
Man I dont want those things on my lawn especially when I have nice ants living there. I must train my ants in the way of combat to protect there home and insure a peaceful coexistence.
I never understood how people could be so afraid of spiders after learning what ants can do. :ohdear:
I hate ants. The little wankers are in my house and they won't leave. Every year they get into my food, they're in the walls too.

As if we didn't have enough reasons to never go to Africa:

Ah, driver ants, not as likely to kill you as fire ants, but when driver ants kill you, they do it by eating you alive, from the inside out.
These are in my house, they get into everything.

I hate them.

Hey! THAT LOUIS GUY HAS MY LAST NAME,
Also, give me a flamethrower, I'm going to burn all of those ants out of my house!

I'd want to toss a log on that bridge and see how sturdy it is
I wonder if ants will evolve sentience in the next few million years.
I always used to like to pretend when I was a wee child that I was a god to them and they were my creations. I'd bring them food like chocolate and bread and sugar, give them plants, help them move things like leaves and sticks. But the SECOND one bit me, I would destroy their entire colony with the water hose.
WHY DID YOU HURT ME MY CHILDREN I LOVED YOU :smith:

You are a terrible god. Why would you punish an entire colony just because a single individual hurt you?
But anyways, Ants don't act as an individual but one communist colony
Ants are Communist.
termites are Fascist
Bees are capitalist.

Because then they would all start swarming towards me. Ants are dicks.

They haven't done it for the last 100 million years. They aren't going to start now.
I've always wanted to make some intricate ant farm that goes all over my room or something but with my luck it'd break and I'd have ants EVERYWHERE.. which wouldn't be cool.
