Dole in the UK is the term used for Jobseekers Allowance So FP, I was wondering if any of you UK FPers knew anything about this apparent money available to 17 year olds that is the equivalent of the dole but like £30 a week instead of £45-48. I was told this by my mother that she knew some people who had been claiming this at 17 when the dole is usually 18. Back-story: I quit my Sixth Form Sept 08 to find a job for a year, didn't get one, applied for college for this Sept and that fell through, for the whole year I had no income other than the odd amount from my mother here and there. I'm now applying for a job (almost definitely will get it) but in the meantime it could be up to a month til I would start and i'm also applying for an apprenticeship in the Navy to be an AET (Air Engineering Technician). I just want to know if anyone knows anything about this and if it is true or not, I don't wanna go to the Job Centre tomorrow and make a fool of myself again without good reason. I know that I will be a scrounger on the government for a little while but at least I won't have a bad conscience for taking the money, my mum pays the taxes towards it anyway.

EMA, education maintenance allowance, look it up.
EMA, education maintenance allowance, look it up.
I may be out of college/school but i'm not stupid, I know what i'm talking about and this is something different, the people my mum knows aren't in college/school either and receive this money.
I thought you were talking about Dole as in and money as in Dole money for school vending machines like I used to do. Only a $1.25 for that delicious kiwi and mango flavors.. How I miss Dole..

Job Seekers allowance, go to the job centre and ask about it, it is 50 pounds roughly every 2 weeks. They expect you to look for a job with it though and they will constantly pester you to find jobs (or give you shitty ones like working in MC Donalds or in a location which is impossible to go to).

Its not really about 'not being able to get a job' I think its just you have not been looking hard enough, there are loads of jobs out there but they just might not be what you want.
I don't know about the UK system, but in Australia, I get A$200 a fortnight which isn't bad at all for a 16 year old.

Lucky Australians.

All the money available to you is Jobseeker's Allowance (if you're estranged from your family) or Education Maintenance Allowance. That's it, there is nothing else. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/YoungPeople/Money/index.htm The idea behind it is that your parent(s) will clothe and feed you so there's nothing the government needs to do to help you. Jobseeker's Allowance is for people to support themselves while they're out of work, to enable them to buy food and pay bills. Education Maintenance Allowance is to encourage kids from "less fortunate" families to go to college.
holy shit he's not kidding. http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/payments/ya_rates.htm
What a blatant waste of money. 16 year olds with no kids who live with their parents seriously don't need money.
Only thing close to that I know is E.M.A., but every one know what that is and I'm pretty sure it's only available to people who are at college (I can't wait 'til I'm in college. EMA + a job = money for more things. I'm poor...)
What a blatant waste of money. 16 year olds with no kids who live with their parents seriously don't need money.
Welcome to Socialism.
Just keep trying for college, at worst case you will get to 18 and then you are eligable for ALG instead of EMA... Leaving full time education was a dumb-shit move, you need qualifications to get a decent job, you need a decent job to survive, you get money while studying through EMA. (£30 a week in my case pluss £100 bi-yearly bonuses) Most of these governmental things take atleast 2 months from application to kick in anyway so you are fucked, go wash cars? :v:
Just keep trying for college, at worst case you will get to 18 and then you are eligable for ALG instead of EMA... Just get a shit-job at a shop till then. There's a difference between an apprenticeship a month off and a shit job you could get overnight. The fact is, in the eyes of the government, if you're under 18 your parents should be providing you with adequate food, shelter and money. My friend has the same problem except he's in college and doesn't get EMA due to coming from a rich family (Which don't give him money) - We go busking and make like £40 for 2 hours work or gigging and make ~£200 as a band for an hour and a halfs work + Drive... Can't beat it :v:
Ah well, i'll be fine without it for another few months, i've applied for some more shit jobs so fingers crossed, but I got what I needed so if a mod wants to close this thread please.
How do you get this? I live in Australia too and I'm 16 and $200 a fortnight would be awesome.
I think it's only for the lowest socio-economic families.
I hope it works out for you anyhow, as hard as money is to make work.
Just get a job and stop sponging off the state. You've said you'll almost definatly get this job, so why bother applying for JSA?
