Never realized that they kinda fucked up the walking animation of the GTA 3 main character.

looks fine to me. It's the vice city stories dude they kinda fucked up.
Niko Bellic best protagonist
i like tommy vercetti the best. he's a psychopath, he knows it, and he embraces it.

best protagonist and best story imo
Its honestly hard to pick a definitive favorite protagonist, you could make a good argument for most of them.
Except Vic.
Vic is kind of bland.
I loved Vice City, I would play as a taxi driver or firefighter for hours and then do a rampage

how'd you play firefighter for hours im playing it on Android and firefighter was HELL, could barely complete it
Perhaps it was easier for me to immersive myself into that kind of stuff because i was simply a lot younger but the atmosphere of both San Andreas and Vice City was so fucking perfect for me. GTA IV and V were both set in modern times so that didn't do much for me but i really hope they will step back into another time period again, i'd love some more 80's

IDK it was easier back then with a controller and being a kid

I honestly think that's going to be one of the "gimmicks" in a future GTA. Instead of 3 protagonists living at the same time, you can switch between 3 different characters living in 3 different time periods in the same city. I'm thinking 1940s, 1980s and 2000s.

You could even integrate some kind of system where depending on what you do, stuff changes in the other time periods, like someone you dont kill gives you missions in the other time frame or something.

Like Spider-Man Edge of Time but not half-assed.
Oh hey I’m as old as GTA
I almost forgot about Jack Thompson

GTA3 back in... Uhm, 2002?, don't exactly know when, was absolutely immersive to me for some reason. Everything felt right. Something that helped that a lot was the radio stations. They made me feel right at home in a late 90s to early 2000s New York and I loved it.
Then came Vice City and while it was fantastic, it just didn't sit perfectly right with me. Not bad at all though, just didn't quite click, which doesn't means its "less than great". Also still had great times with it. The property's mechanic was lovely.
Then came San Andreas which took me a while to digest, but when I did, it cemented itself as the best. It feels magical now, and as nostalgic as gta3 to me.
4 reminds me a lot of 3, but with an actual story and protagonist. Really good protagonist and story, and I haven't finished the game yet. I forget why though. It feels a bit more naked in terms of content in comparison to SA but...
... Its so much better than gtaV.
V isn't bad, but its not even a shadow of what IV is. It has more content, but that still doesn't makes it good enough, and the fact that every update goes towards the shark card mode is just pathetic.
Ah, Dundee's finest export.
I remember the original fondly, I got it for Christmas when visiting family in Ireland when I was 10 or something and I wasn't allowed to tell anybody. Funny to look back and think that had an 18 age restriction, but that goes for a lot of old games.
I played III the most though, and that was mostly in singleplayer. When I discovered MTA round about 2003 that was it, I was straight into multiplayer VC and SA, didn't matter how fucking shit and buggy it was, loved every second of it. Shame what happened with multiplayer in IV and V.
GTA2 had the best soundtrack.

GTA III has that really specific atmospherically somber tone a bunch of stuff had back in the day thats really nice.

Personally i rank GTA IV's story as one of the worst.
It's a very fun game and the story is fun to play along but there is absolutely 0 character development. The only 'development' that actually happened were things that happened before the games setting. The closest we come to development is Roman becoming less a womanizer and Niko 'sort of' gaining a conscious is a player allows him to. Every other character remains the same as youre introduced to them. Dwaynes depressed, Packie's crazy and a dick, vlad is a cunt, Bernie is stereotypically gay, Brucie is a roid head ect ect. They're all very stereotypical shallow personalities.
The plot line is repetative thematically and is non deviating and is mostly composed of Niko going 'EVERYTHING WAS SHIT WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I KILL CAUSE I HAVE TO BUT MAYBE I DONT' which is rendered moot because its player driven and can be completely ignored and Niko barely reacts to either chosen side. The ending is absolutely forced and regardless of which is killed you're left going 'oh, i'm supposed to care?' one of the people naturally youd be more upset by, but niko's 'love interest'. I don't know a single person who when that person died they went 'oh no'. They just went 'oh yeah i was told i could date that person'.
Nothing really happens throughout the plot, things just change slightly. Roman is no longer poor, niko is still troubled and depressed, Brucies an entitled man child. The most radical change is probably just what direction the McCreary Family goes and the game barely fucking acknowledges a single change.
Hell even San Andreas had better character development and impacting actions and choices that reflect on the world.
Niko is the best on paper protagonist for his moral conscious but when placed into the hands of players that's completely irrelevant. Gta Iv's story was the most 'immersive' id say and i could really get into it, but nothing actually HAPPENED.

The way GTA IV presented itself, i think that may have been the point. These characters are too broken to fix. Unlike the other games, besides a couple simple short term goals, they essentially lose in the end.

Yeah i do agree it was presented fantastically. It was Rockstars first attempt in a game like GTA to be more cinematic and serious and i absolutely loved that. It was easy to fall into the world and really get into it but i wouldn't call that the story. The just built a fantastic world with broken characters. The actual story and plot line from start to finish though just served as a reminder that the characters were unchangingly fucked because nothing actually happened.
GTA:SA is honestly one of the best games ever made, in my opinion. At the time it was the biggest game world with the most authentic feeling I'd explored and there was never a dull moment while exploring it.
I really liked CJ as a character and the story progression to be really enjoyable. Vice City probably had the best story though, at least in the sense that it felt more like a focused plot akin to an action movie.

It still feels like the biggest game world because of the perfect pacing and variety in scenery and missions.
I dont care how big GTAV may technically be, it feels tiny compared to San Andreas.
Hoping for "GTA: Tokyo" next

That is a ridiculous amount of work. GTAV had the biggest game budget in history at the time, and they came dangerously close to bottoming out during development. Now take that same workload and triple it for that one gimmick.
Ain't gonna happen.

Maybe cut back on the budget then.
I mean personally, i play games if they're good, not if they spent a billion dollars on making it.

Which was the core idea behind the concept. No matter what you are trying to do, you can't reshape your life, not even with the help of the "American Dream".
Niko was entire life a murderer and criminal and wanted to run away from that life coming to America, where Roman was rich and luxurious; that never happened so he took his matter into his own hands and tried conquering the American Dream, and when it happened, it all went to shitter because you simply can't leave that life behind you. And neither will it.
