At least three Canadians who joined an al-Qaeda-linked militant group in Syria were directly involved in the holding and harsh interrogation of two U.S. journalists in the region, CBC News has confirmed.
Sources say the Canadians, whose identities aren't known by CBC, took part in the imprisonment of Theo Curtis and Matt Schrier, who were held in captivity together between 2011 and 2013. The Canadian captors reportedly forced the hostages to hand over their computer passwords and PINs, draining their accounts. They then callously wrote letters and emails to the journalists' families pretending to be the men, and then set about going after their credit cards and racking them up, buying electronics and computers on eBay, according to the sources.
Those Canadians are believed to be alive and still at it — and their ranks seem to be swelling.
For the better part of a year, the Canadian government spoke of 130 being the rough number of Canadians fighting overseas with extremist groups, largely in Syria. That number is now thought to be vastly underestimating the total number.
From CBC's investigations, it now appears that the 200 to 300 range is more accurate.
Not Canadians in my book sorry.
Let's be honest; the last people I'd peg to commit terror acts and/or fight for terrorist groups, especially one as scummy as IS, would be Canadians.

Hey here's a neat idea lets leave our stable, well-off first world country and go to a third world backwater warzone where anarchy and fighting is rife instead
some things i will never understand

this ain't the canadian spirit

To think people would do this, they'd have to be severely mentally unstable.
Honestly, I am not surprised.
With how diverse our country is, there is a huge chance that there are more Islamic Canadians that are fighting in terrorist-militant groups. I will never understand what makes someone throw away their whole life in safety for something like this.
Treasonous fucks.
Fucking scum, revoke citizenship and get JTF2 on their asses right fucking now.
Are there laws for citizenship revokation over this stuff?
Are there laws for citizenship revokation over this stuff?
yep
Controversially, the changes give the government powers to revoke the citizenship of Canadians who have dual citizenship and are found guilty in terrorism or treason cases.

It doesn't matter that much though because they're very unlikely to want it back, and even more unlikely to need it seeing as it's probable they will die in Syria.

Glad to see this discussion happening.
In addition, permanent residents seeking citizenship must intend to continue to live in Canada. Or, if they are living outside of Canada but working in public service or with the armed forces, they must intend to keep working those jobs, or to stay married and living with a spouse who works one of those jobs.
During the Lebanon crisis in 2006 Canada spent millions on evacuating "Canadians" who had never even been to Canada, many of whom didn't even know English or French. After that they just went home.
Not Canadians in my book sorry.
ok but they're Canadians
How are they going to torture them? Serve them pancakes with no maple syrup?
Nah, just bury them up to their neck with sand, boil the maple syrup in a pot, pour the syrup on their face, and then just walk away. They'll become a salt lick to a variety of insects and animals.
Okay seriously though, our countries really need to keep some checks on anyone attempt to fight as a foreign volunteer in any war. Not only are we seeing an increase of Americans and Canadians going to the Middle East, but we are starting to see several people go, "oh fuck russia" and going to Ukraine and shit to fight. Shit is getting pretty bad.

When they run of water and get thirsty we won't give them free refills

Give them that Aunt Jemima shit. True punishment
That thread title feels like the result of a mad-lib.
Why don't we just agree to not send journalists there anymore?
ok but they're Canadians
They lost the right to be Canadian the moment they joined those pigs.
I don't know why but the first thing I imagined when I saw the title was two Canadian journalists tied 2 US journalist in a locked hotel room demanding maple syrup as a ransom.

Because you don't report from afar.
