Anti-American crusader Sima Nan (司马南) got his head stuck recently at an escalator at the airport in Washington D.C. but he can consider himself lucky that he walked away with moderate injuries. A nine-year-old boy in Beijing was not so fortunate. He died yesterday after his head got caught between two escalators at a mall:
The child had been playing on the escalator alone while his mother, a saleswoman, was working, said the Beijing Emergency Medical Center.
Traveling from the fifth to the sixth floor about 12:30pm, he craned his neck over the side and looked down, unaware that he was approaching a point where the escalator he was traveling on passed close to another traveling downwards.
The boy's head became wedged between the two escalators and he was killed immediately.

Jesus Christ. RIP
Escelators are fucking scary
What is an "Anti-American crusader"?
This is why you're supposed to put in those plastic walls between two escalators
More china quality right there
oh god fuck, this is dreadful :(
Is Facepunch TRYING to give me an escalator phobia?
It's working.
So sorry for the kid :( at least he probably didn't know what was happening and he died immediately (not that it's ok that he died at all).
Note to self: never look out from an escalator.

More like this is why you're not supposed to leave your child unattended, let alone take your child to work and leave him unattended.
Despite how hard I try, I can't figure out how he died.
How exactly do you get your head wedged between escalators? And what parts of the escalators did he get wedged in?
This is why you should never lean over the side.

I think there were two side by side escalators facing opposite directions, he was leaning over the side and got caught under the other one.
Must have made a real mess.
Like this.

That sounds horrible. How does that happen?

Escalators usually are paired up in opposite directions when space is an issue, forming an X, with one escalator going up, and the other going down. If you have something precious and soft (such as your head) between them at the point when they cross, you can get some pretty bad damage

Slowly decreasing distance between escalators going different ways, so the distance bwteen them ends up being like / \ ?
Usually there is enough clearance each side but seeing as this happened in China it's not really surprising.
I actually shiver at the thought of this.
I'm still trying to imagine what's happening but I simply can't.
Isn't there enough time for him to get out of it? And isn't like a slow process cause escalators go rather slow?
As if I already need more incentive to take the stairs over an escalator. Poor kid. On another note, I can't help but be skeptical whenever something is labeled as "instantaneous death'.
My fear over escalators started when I heard the story about a woman that stod on a broken step which broke due to her weight. She fell into the cogs and machinery, which killed her instantly...

You know how the railings on the escalators move with the stairs?
Those pretty much snapped his neck instantly
so I'm guessing that if there was an elevator pushing his head one way and another pushing it in the opposite direction that it would have just snapped his neck right?

Thanks for that. :suicide:
sensationalist headline is slowly giving me fears of all things that move which can be stood on
Maybe this is the reasoning behind Malls keeping the Up and Down escalators a week's journey away from each other.
Poor kid was probably just having fun, going up and down to different floors, but the circumstances were just against him that day. I really hope that he had no time to rationalize what was going on.
But really, as terrifying as escalators may seem due to terrible deaths getting published, they're much safer then taking the stairs.
EDIT:
For those still confused, this is how I believe the event occurred.

What a grim way to start my day, but I was confused at first, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Of course I could be wrong, but this is what I gathered.

Coming from the person who's country is too dumb to realize coffee is hot and things out of the microwave can burn you.
You have nothing to fear from any machine as long as you aren't retarded.
My brother fell down the escalator at woolworths.
