why is it math rock
According to wikipedia: Math rock is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), angular melodies, and dissonant chords
I think its called math rock because of the technical play on the guitars. I hate how all the math rock band names and song names have nothing to do with anything usually.
I love this so much
I never knew modest mouse's work was inspired by math rock.

I was stupid I guess.

I think I became a hardcore math rock fan in under 5 minutes thanks
not really a math person, but I love toe, Polvo and of course Slint.

no it's called math rock as a joke
Does math metal count? Cause Meshuggah are awesome.

even though they play 4/4 nearly 24/7 lol
even though they play 4/4 nearly 24/7 lol
The cool thing is it's 4/4 disguised as ridiculous time signatures due to the subdivisions, so you can see it both ways. In general I see it as crazy time signatures with a 4/4 pulse.
I like some math rock, I have yet to really get into the stuff
Sometimes the feel of the music is too "weird" for me, not sure how to describe it :v:
even though they play 4/4 nearly 24/7 lol
Depends on the way you see it
You can measure any song in any time signature
well no they have come out and outright said the majority of their songs are in 4/4
Here's my own math rock song. It's mathy.

The best math band ever though is Meet Me In St Louis and I'm not fucking kidding. Them and Colour. And Tubelord.
well no they have come out and outright said the majority of their songs are in 4/4
Depends on how you view them
When I'm listening to Meshuggah, I'm not listening to 4/4
on how you view them? sorry when they say their songs are in 4/4 I believe them
because they wrote them
on how you view them? sorry when they say their songs are in 4/4 I believe them

They are obviously wrong. :downs:
most math rock bands also play in 4/4
both don cab and battles play in 4/4 but they stress the beats in weird places which makes it all janky
that's two bands, yeah they are some of the biggest but the majority of math I listen to is not that
I've heard the new Njiqahdda album being called as Mathy.

Slint are known for being a big influence on math-rock.

First song in OP has me impressed with the genre.

I don't think time signatures are subjective
yeah last time I checked
I don't think time signatures are subjective
They are. You can write a song in a certain time signature but anyone can feel it in anyway. One of the cool things about them is that they are subjective, and you can use that to make normal things sound weird.
