So I just got the Amazon Kindle as a early Christmas Present (going on a plane friday) and I was wondering if any other FPers had one of these things? with a battery life of 2 weeks with wireless off, and a 1500 book capacity, I love this thing.

If anyone does have it, can you recommend any good sites that I could get books from?
There are mixed feelings about this thing when I show it around, people say that holding a book and flipping pages 'feels' better for them, and they don't really like it. I think it's pretty cool though.
It feels pretty durable and the case is leather for it, it can be kind of slow at times, and there is some 'ghosting' issues because of the type of screen it has that makes it look like paper.
also: some random pics of it

Some size comparisons:

So what are your thoughts about this thing? reactions? attractions? putoffs? random obscenities?
It looks like an Apple Gameboy that obviously does neat things like video games
oh wait
I find that I spend enough time gawping at screens. I wouldn't really want to spend an exciting evening surfing the web, then go to bed and look at another screen. That's what's always put me off those e-readers.
Nice, it would be handy if you were a really fast reader, and wanted to read a few books on holiday but not carry books around. But surely there aren't always the books you want available for download?
I would buy one if it wasn't overpriced.

It has, and i Quote, over 320,000 books (and counting) available for download from their store. and the books are much cheaper b/c of no paper cost. ($30 books for $9.99 anyone?)
Aw, sweet! Does it have House of Leaves?
If they were around $99 I would totally get one, just for reading blogs and magazines.
But I don't read a lot of books so for me $260+ is too expensive for what they do.

checking right now...
It doesn't...hmmm
but if you can find the book in a text format online (which is legal with books that have lost their copyright) than you can put it on the kindle and read it too.
I think my eyes would get tired looking at that. My eyes already do staring at my computer screen so I prefer paper myself.

The screen is designed to look like a piece of paper. It doesn't have a backlight, so it wont glare at you. In my experience, it feels like I'm reading pages in a book.
If they were less expensive, I'd probably get one for the convenience of having all of my large school textbooks and various role-playing game manuals on a small digital device.
Then again, the loss of the ability to "flip" the pages is still a loss.
If I was rich and could waste money on things (not saying its a waste of money, just that I don't have enough of said money to replace my books with a kindle) I would get one.
They do look kinda awesome. One of those things that I can wait 10 years or so for, so they become cheaper and common as muck. Hopefully ;D
If it doesn't have a back-light, isn't it a bitch to read?
It's not a bitch to read, it's 'feels' like a piece of paper. As thier site says: "you can read with no glare, even on a sunny day."
My girlfriend has one, its pretty nifty. You can download any book whenever you want.
I prefer actual books though, the smell of paper soothes me.
How much are they going for nowadays?
I remember looking at them before and they were £150 which is crazy. I could buy an iPod touch with that.
I like a real book for the feel of it. And real books have cool art on sometimes so yeah
Looks.. pretty neat, actually.
Not sure how happy I'd be with taking it on a summer holiday though - can't imagine it would deal with the poolside / the beach particularly well.
"Then he used his fight money to buy two every animal on Earth and the herded them on to a boat and then he beat the crap out of every single one of them!"
I guess if you want to read quotes from Team Fortress trailers on the go it's pretty handy.
It wont ''burn'' your eyes, it's screen uses e-ink which is the same thing as the stuff you find in an etch a sketch (which explains the slow refresh rate). Also, that's the kindle 2.
It seems overpriced - to me anyway. I am not an avid reader, and would get bored after a while. What would actually make me want to buy this little device for such a price would be:
-Web Browsing (Checking FP while on public transport etc, doesnt have to be perfect)
-Ability to check mail, go on msn
-Apps (simple ones, but still)
-Text editor (Why not write an essay on this? It seems perfect..)
-Additional Backlight (What if I want to read in the dark?)
Can you get books for other languages than English?

I'm doing a monolouge which involves various quotes from the soldier.

eink screens, downloads through the cellular network that you don't pay a monthly fee for, Wikipedia and an RSS reader. It's a large sum on money, though you're getting a lot.
Hell, I was going to buy my mother one, though stopped when I read that Rogers is doing the Canadian cellular services, turning off the web browser and RSS reader. Fuck you Robbers.
What's the keyboard for?
Looks like the sony one, cant remember what it was called though.
I wouldn't get it because it's really expensive plus you probably look like a douche carrying one of these around.
the commerical for this doesn't make any sense
Then he herded them onto a boat and beat the crap
