The idea for the song, “Yakko’s World,” was simple: List (almost) all of the nations of the world, as the countries light up on a board behind the character. The song, set to the tune of the “Mexican Hat Dance,” ran in the second episode of the series in 1993, voiced by Mr. Paulsen as Yakko. For fans of the Warner Bros. cartoon, which ran from 1993 to 1998 and spawned the also-popular “Pinky and the Brain,” the nation-naming song remains an earworm after all these years. Last week, Mr. Paulsen said, when he was pitching a new television show, some millennials at the meeting in Los Angeles asked him to sing it again. As he often does, he obliged. “The problem comes when people stop asking,” he said in a telephone interview. “I’m incredibly grateful.” The show has gained a new bump in attention after Netflix added the series to its lineup on April 1. And starting this year, Mr. Paulsen, 60, plans to reunite with the voices of Wakko (Jess Harnell) and Dot (Tress MacNeille) on tour to perform many of the show’s memorable songs, including Wakko’s list of American states and their capitals and a recollection of all of the U.S. presidents. This time, the voice actors will be backed by a full orchestra, as they were with the Colorado Symphony in 2014. History buffs might be glad to hear that Mr. Paulsen will perform a new verse of “Yakko’s World,” which was written before the Soviet Union broke up, in 1991. The song has been frequently nitpicked for its omissions and shortcuts, and the new verse will add any nations formed in the past 25 years.
NY Times
I hope that this turns into is a huge success. Tom Ruegger (creator of Animaniacs) had an AMA yesterday and someone asked if there were plans to bring back the show. He said "If Warner Bros. sends out the call, most of us would be happy to give it another run." I hope this and the recent boost of popularity on Netflix means Warner Bros. might consider bringing it back.
It needs to come to Canadian Netflix
This show was a big part of my childhood.
the more animaniacs, the better
God, I barely remember this show from ads or re-runs. I've only ever watched the presidents song on YouTube. I just hope these people aren't typecast from this.
I remember when it was apparently a huge deal that he WB had gotten the rights to this back from Fox. Then they just aired the same reruns until they condensed a majority of their programming, Animaniacs included, into a half hour show and filled the rest of the day with Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Glad to see Animaniacs is relevant again.
somewhat relevant
I hope they get a good pianist. You know, to help with the musical score during the singing. They could also use a nice cock. So that they could sing the chicken boo song, and have it dance around on stage. Unfortunate that they can't get Dick to compose any new songs for them, though. He did a lot of great songs from that era.
