Saudi Arabia's cabinet has approved a ban on domestic and other abuse for the first time.
The new law sets penalties for all forms of physical and sexual abuse, both at home and in the workplace.
These include penalties of up to a year in prison and fines of up to $13,000. The law will also provide shelter for victims of domestic abuse.
Rights activists have welcomed the move but also questioned the effectiveness of the implementation of the law.
[sp]I'm so sorry[/sp]
Progress is good, I don't think anyone can oppose this.
Holy shit that advert.
Won't be enforced. At all.
Saudi Arabia's women's rights are....well they basically don't have any. Women are not even allowed to drive a vehicle of any form.
Bro, Saudi Arabia is like, the most forward thinking of all the Sharia law bound countries. Their king is a total bro.
Edit: There, I enhanced the key terms there for the people that aren't capable of paying attention for more than a few seconds.

Women aren't allowed to fucking drive in cars over there, I can't call it 'most forward' without laughing.

Okay, so, like. Being able to drive is more important than it being legal for a woman to be beat up at home?
Eyyy, progress.
congratz saudi arabia, bit late (by that i mean really late) but whatever
Right, does this mean a husband forcing himself on his wife is actually considered rape now? Or is sexual assault within marriage still viewed as an impossibility/contradiction?

Good thing they are standing up to that.

Saudi Arabia seems like a country that enforces all its laws seriously.
You must have really low standards for what you consider "forward thinking".
It must be any society with a culture from a century with more than 3 digits.

Considering the neighboring nation's laws on women's rights, I'd say they're at least moving slowly on the right track.
Progress, no matter how small, is still progress.

Yeah, I'm so sorry that I view progress in general as a good thing. It's not like them having a patriarchal societal structure like this put in place by law for the past few hundred years is going to impede social equality in any way.

I thought they changed that fairly recently?

He wasn't referring to them as a forward thinking in relation to the rest of the world. He was referring to them as forward thinking as compared to other similar countries (as he said, Sharia law bound). That does not imply at all that he considers them to be forward thinking when comparing the world as a whole.
Dubai is a fucking tourist area shithole AFAIK. Those laws only apply within the city, and even then, rape is a huge problem there last I knew as well, outside of the city, well, you're better off dead than being a woman. It's sad that we have places in our world that make you better off being dead than being there.

I probably should have put that in bold italics.. Context is often lost in these parts of Facepunch.

hyperbole much
I'd like to see how police process domestic abuse reports before taking a stance on it.
Wouldn't be enforced at all.
It must be any society with a culture from a century with more than 3 digits.
Poor Iceland. :(

Qatar? Kuwait? Oman?
Saudi Arabia seems like a country that enforces all its laws seriously.
Death by hanging or eye for an eye for the first domestic abuser.
Either that or the hand that made the first strike gets chopped up.

"it's a family matter."

Gonna call bullshit. If you're not a rich, royally-connected, pale-skinned Arab Muslim male, it's a shit country.

Bad reading x 1
The most forward, it is, even if it's not very forward. It's all relative
Gonna call bullshit. If you're not a rich, royally-connected, pale-skinned Arab Muslim male, it's a shit country.
But is it better in any other Sharia bound countries?
Instead of men beating the shit out of women, they will now do it as well but 'we just don't talk about it'.
That picture gives me a strong feeling in the gut

Almost like as if this didn't happen everywhere in the world.
