• The argument AGAINST pornography

There is a myth that porn is harmless. “It’s just a few consenting adults, doing what they want with their own bodies,” the thinking goes. Especially in a community like this people will shrug off the worst things so long as they are fooled at face value that "It doesn't look as bad as it really is so it's okay" But this simply isn’t true. In reality, pornography is deeply involved in the exploitation of women and children as well as being destructive to its consumers. Porn is much more than an individual decision—it is part of a system that preys on women and children, and its viewers are participating in, contributing to, and being shaped by that destructive, enslaving system. PORN FUELS THE SEX TRADE Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and it is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world. Sex trafficking is one of the most profitable forms of trafficking and involves many kinds of sexual exploitation, such as prostitution, pornography, bride trafficking, and the commercial sexual abuse of children. According to the United Nations, sex trafficking brings in an estimated $32 billion a year worldwide. In the U.S., sex trafficking brings in $9.5 billion annually. The primary way porn fuels the sex trade is by building the demand. The sex trade consists of supply and demand. The supply consists of women and children who are either forced into exploitation at home or lured away from their homes with promises of jobs, travel, and a better life. The average age of girls who enter into street prostitution is between 12 and 14 years old, and even younger in some developing countries. Traffickers coerce women and children to enter the commercial sex industry through a variety of recruitment techniques in strip clubs, street-based prostitution, and escort services. Thousands of children and women are victimized in this way every year. The trafficking industry would not exist without demand. According to researcher Andrea Bertone,(http://digilib.bc.edu/reserves/sw826/bertone826.pdf) the demand consists of men who feed a “patriarchal world system” that preys on women and children. PORN SHAPES SEXUAL DESIRES Pornography shapes the appetites of men, women, and children to accept and even enjoy the exploitation of women. As Robert Jensen writes: (http://new.vawnet.org/Assoc_Files_VAWnet/AR_PornAndSV.pdf) There are a few basic themes in pornography: 1) All women at all times want sex from all men; 2) women enjoy all the sexual acts that men perform or demand, and; 3) any woman who does not at first realize this can be easily turned with a little force. It is important to note that porn is not just a “men’s issue,” as 28 percent of people admitting internet sexual addiction are women. Approximately 9 out of 10 children between the ages of 8 and 16 have viewed pornography on the Internet. The average age of first Internet exposure to pornography is 11 years old and in most cases it is unintentional. The largest consumer of Internet pornography is 12- to 17-year-old boys. Porn teaches its consumers that women exist for the pleasure of men and that their purpose is to be degraded and dehumanized for men’s excitement—and that they like it, even if they pretend not to. But this is part of the lie of pornography: many women in porn are there against their will and are being exploited. According to Jensen, “There is evidence that force and coercion are sometimes used to secure women’s participation . . . that psychological and physical damage is common and that heavy alcohol and drug use are routine.” PORN EXPLOITS CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE VICTIMS Mary Anne Layden,(http://www.med.upenn.edu/cct/faculty_layden.html) a psychotherapist and Director of the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania, reports that most women involved in the sex industry are adult survivors of sexual abuse. Research indicates that the number is between 60 to 80 percent. Simply put, most women in the porn industry are adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and porn perpetuates their exploitation. Additionally, 20 percent of all Internet pornography involves children. PORN SUPPORTS “RAPE CULTURE” The physical, emotional, and psychological damage to the women and children in porn is heartbreaking, but equally insidious is porn’s effect on men and the culture by normalizing the degradation and dehumanization of women. Jensen explains, “As pornography has become more acceptable, both legally and culturally, the level of brutality toward, and degradation of, women has intensified.” The prevalence of porn means that people are becoming desensitized to it, and are seeking out ever harsher, more violent, and degrading images. Even the porn industry is shocked by how much violence the fans want. As one pornography director put it, “People just want it harder, harder, and harder . . . what are you gonna do next?” Robin Morgan’s phrase “Pornography is the theory, rape is the practice” captures the link between the production and consumption of pornography and violence against women and children. The point is not that porn causes all viewers to sexually abuse others, but that it creates what some researches call “rape culture” by normalizing, legitimizing, and condoning violence against women and children. PORN HIJACKS CHILDREN’S SEXUALITY Gail Dines, author of Pornland: How Porn Has Hi-Jacked Our Sexuality , explains the implications of porn: “We are now bringing up a generation of boys on cruel, violent porn. … Given what we know about how images affect people, this is going to have a profound influence on their sexuality, behavior and attitudes towards women.” Mary Anne Layden argues: “There is evidence that the prevalence of pornography in the lives of many children and adolescents is far more significant than most adults realize, that pornography is deforming the healthy sexual development of these young viewers, and that it is used to exploit children and adolescents.” PORN LIMITS MEN While porn is not just a “men’s issue,” it remains pervasively a male problem. William Struthers, a bio-psychologist, explains the effects on men: “Men seem to be wired in such a way that pornography hijacks the proper functioning of their brains and has a long-lasting effect on their thoughts and lives.” Porn limits male self-expression and has proven to be psychologically detrimental to some viewers. Frequent pornographic stimulus changes the neurological makeup in the brain—it actually rewires the viewer’s brain. Everyone involved in the supply chain, from production to consumption, is participating in the economic juggernaut that is the porn industry, whether they realize it or not. And many of them are unaware of the harm being done to themselves and others. This industry fuels the global sex trade, builds the demand for exploitation, severely distorts sexuality, exploits abuse victims, and normalizes the degradation of women and children. That’s why porn is much more than a private, individual decision
Porn is not target or supposed to be viewed by children and porn actors/actress's are suppose to be consenting adults. You cant take something away because others don't play by the rules.
PORN HIJACKS CHILDREN’S SEXUALITY Gail Dines, author of Pornland: How Porn Has Hi-Jacked Our Sexuality , explains the implications of porn: “We are now bringing up a generation of boys on cruel, violent porn. … Given what we know about how images affect people, this is going to have a profound influence on their sexuality, behavior and attitudes towards women.” Mary Anne Layden argues: “There is evidence that the prevalence of pornography in the lives of many children and adolescents is far more significant than most adults realize, that pornography is deforming the healthy sexual development of these young viewers, and that it is used to exploit children and adolescents.”
Which is why there is/or should be sex education programmes in place to teach children that pornography often portrays a very skewed version of sexuality. Dines is giving me an impression that her generation is not educating their children on sexuality. Porn obviously aimed at an adult demographic, you can't expect the studios to create an ''informative'' porn that gives a more accurate view of sexuality as a whole.
PORN SUPPORTS “RAPE CULTURE” The physical, emotional, and psychological damage to the women and children in porn is heartbreaking, but equally insidious is porn’s effect on men and the culture by normalizing the degradation and dehumanization of women. Pornography is never gonna go away. As long as guys have a sex drive we will have people using it for business.

How does porn support a rape culture? If anything it does the opposite.

Asking for others to search for the evidence for a claim you made is not how you debate. GJ on looking like an asshole though.
I feel that the whole debate againt pornography (in this instance) stems from a western [christian] view of sex. Sex is then a bond between two indivuals, and there is love involved. Unconditional sex without a purpose (future children) is then something to look down on. With such a view recorded sex becomes an abomination. The though of people having sex in front of a camera, and people later watching it for masturbation and/or other purposes, gets disgusting. I wonder if alot of people advocating againt pornography actually have ever watched some theirselves. Ofcourse there is pornography with underage individuals or fetish pornography where women/men are subjected to pain and/or demeening actions. But is the fault really in pornpgraphy as a phenomena? Making two individuals fucking on camera illegal is just telling people that their ways are wrong and that their views of matters have no place in society.
Another example of humans trying to limit right and wrong with morals almost as if they think right and wrong is a natural force in the universe. Life is disgusting so just get used to it and fap.
You're all fucking morons. Use your brain. I wont waste my time spelling out each word for people who apparently can't read. Go to college, get an education. Then come back.
I feel like I'm just repeating what others are saying, but I feel compelled to put my thoughts in anyway. It's a well accepted rule of debating that personal attacks aren't to be used, except in the case of debating the character of an individual. Also, supplying an argument, and statistics without your source is bad for your argument. It's similar to debates about religion - the burden of proof (or evidence) is on the one making the claim. You included some sources, but most of the statistics you used don't have a source. Besides this, your argument presumes that there is a universal moral standard towards sexuality, and sexual orientation. What dictates this? Also according to your argument, all-male homosexual pornography is not damaging because it does not feature women being degraded? Another thing to take into account is the pornography consumers that do not actually pay attention to the premise of the film, and simply skip to the "action".
The prevalence of porn means that people are becoming desensitized to it, and are seeking out ever harsher, more violent, and degrading images
I disagree with this as well. Of course there will always be some who push the limits, this will always happen. But to suggest the majority of men want to see increasingly degrading pornography, and that they need it more harsh and violent to fulfill their needs, needs a source.
Robin Morgan’s phrase “Pornography is the theory, rape is the practice” captures the link between the production and consumption of pornography and violence against women and children. The point is not that porn causes all viewers to sexually abuse others, but that it creates what some researches call “rape culture” by normalizing, legitimizing, and condoning violence against women and children.
This is a flawed argument, because it assumes that men are viewing the sex in pornography as non-consentual. Most porn does not include violence, and is clearly a consensual act.
women get fucked guys fuck them [editline]28th November 2012[/editline] its like the most basic truth
I would like to adress a few of your points.
In reality, pornography is deeply involved in the exploitation of women and children as well as being destructive to its consumers.
All of the legal pornography is not, and cannot be, exploitation. The reason is simple: Both the actor and actress are paid. Being a pornographic actor/actress is a career.
Porn is much more than an individual decision—it is part of a system that preys on women and children
Pornography is a personal decision, both to particiapte in it, or to view it. It is unfair to compare child pornography with legal forms of pornography because one is a career and the other is exploitation, so I will hand you the children exploitation point.
PORN FUELS THE SEX TRADE
You are mistaken, profit fuels the sex trade. You said it yourself:
sex trafficking brings in $9.5 billion annually.
One doesn't start a business to create jobs, they start a business to create wealth. What I mean by this is: these people aren't trafficing women and children with the pure intention to do harm, they are doing it for the intention to make money.
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and it is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world.
Prostitution has been around since ancient Roman times where prostitutes would approach men in the bath house, offering sex for money. To imply that pornography is a driver of prostitution is incorrect for the simple reason that prostitution has been around much longer than pornography.
PORN SHAPES SEXUAL DESIRES
It does not shape desires, it depicts desires.
Pornography shapes the appetites of men, women, and children to accept and even enjoy the exploitation of women.
Two things: 1) The appetite is not one of exploitation. The sexual drive is something that is completely natural, and is not something that should be hidden or oppressed. It's simple biology. 2) Pornography does not shape the appetite, it satisfies it.
9 out of 10 children between the ages of 8 and 16 have viewed pornography on the Internet.

The largest consumer of Internet pornography is 12- to 17-year-old boys.
This is not by fault of the pornography industry. There are such things as parental controls on computers and tv sets. It is the parent's fault 100% for not monitoring their child's activity on the computer or televisions. I believe there is a law that forces the company to state that their products contain sexual content and it is unlawful for persons under the age of 18 to consume their products.
PORN EXPLOITS CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE VICTIMS
I think pornography with persons under 18 is child abuse. Just because there are some pornographers that use child actors, mainstream porn does not. A part of a whole should not be allowed to dictate judgment over the whole. For example: Just because there are cases of police abusing authority does not mean every police officer abuses their authority.
PORN SUPPORTS “RAPE CULTURE”
You have rape culture in quotations, as if it is to mean something specific, but in your post you do not define "rape culture". To imply that pornography condones rape, which is an act of violence centered around the idea of control rather than sex, is complete ludicrous.
The prevalence of porn means that people are becoming desensitized to it
People are starting to embrace that sexuality is a part of who we are as a species, and that it is something that should be acceptable in society. KEEP IN MIND: I'm not implying that everyone go watch porn, but to deny and oppress our sexuality is a denial of self.
the link between the production and consumption of pornography and violence against women and children.
Let us get something clear. "Violence against women" is beginning to be interpreted as something that it isn't. Violence against women is when you come home from work and give your wife a black eye because dinner isn't ready. I don't consider rape violence against women. I consider it violence. Rape can happen to any gender, it's not female specific.
The point is not that porn causes all viewers to sexually abuse others, but that it creates what some researches call “rape culture” by normalizing, legitimizing, and condoning violence against women and children.
The theory that media drives people to do things is something that has been debated for a long time. Does violent music, images, movees, ect. cause a child to pick up a gun and shoot up their school? The answer is not definitive. However, I do not subscribe to this theory. My thought process is this: If someone picks up a gun and goes shooting, it's probably because they are mentally ill. Short of being desperate or ill, there is little or nothing that could drive someone to commit such an atrocity.
PORN HIJACKS CHILDREN’S SEXUALITY
Pornography is not designed for children. Children should not be viewing pornography, period the end.
“Men seem to be wired in such a way that pornography hijacks the proper functioning of their brains and has a long-lasting effect on their thoughts and lives.”
Ludicrous. To suggest that pornography turns normaly functioning male into a sex addicted rapist is so completely ridiculous, I'm not sure how anyone can take William Struthers seriously. How manipulable does this man think the male mind is? That is insulting, frankly.
Porn limits male self-expression and has proven to be psychologically detrimental to some viewers. Frequent pornographic stimulus changes the neurological makeup in the brain—it actually rewires the viewer’s brain.
I would like to see the study that has proved that theory. The drive to watch pornography is caused by being horny, which is natural. So this is stating that being horny re-wires the brain? Ludicrous. Utter ludicrous.
None of this is concrete enough to justify banning porn. Sure, sex trafficking is a problem, but that means we should be fighting sex trafficking, not porn. There's nothing inherently wrong with porn, but there is something inherently wrong with sex trafficking.
All of the legal pornography is not, and cannot be, exploitation. The reason is simple: Both the actor and actress are paid. Being a pornographic actor/actress is a career.
Have to disagree here. I'd say taking advantage of the fact that a person has money pressures to make them do something they'd normally be uncomfortable doing, to the extent of something like having sex on camera for money, is exploitation. Honestly, I think we like to draw a neat little line between porn and prostitution but they're honestly incredibly similar. The only really major difference is whether or not the end consumer is the one a girl is having sex with.
