A nice effort but most Firefox users use an addblock of some sort any ways :buddy:
I've had a pretty hefty hosts file for years now. Don't know whether it stops tracking at all, but I haven't been bothered by ads in my browsers, on msn or in other programs which have Internet access for a long time.
Only downside is occasionally I get a few sites which don't load properly (it's really a rare case, but some things like Nat Geo's online videos don't load (Easy fix, I just can't be fucked finding what URL the content is coming via)).
I don't completely understand why Google wants to do this. I mean their ads are based on the exact thing they're trying to block themselves from

Publicity I guess.

Opt out from TRACKING, not from ads

Google loses nothing
Adblock and custom settings, anything more will just be a bonus.

The reason for tracking is to personalize advertisements shown to the users, so they're more likely to see an ad they're interested in. Which means more potential customers for advertisers and more clicks (-> ad income) for Google and site owners.

I gueess those who'd opt out of personalized advertisements aren't likely to click on ads much anyway.
Good
The only pain with tracking opt-out is that in the case of Google Analytics, it doesn't even leave a hitcounter. Tends to skew results.
I'm definitely all for opting out though.
I'm blocking Google ads so I don't get a virus.
I use opera manual block and adblock and I haven't seen ads in my computer in ages.

I guess its Google trying to stick to "don't be evil".
Really nice of Google to do this, stuff like this is why people who say "Google has gone to shit, they're evil SHUT THEM DOWN" are stupid
