• Old Console Tech Demos v. "An entire machine struggling to render a single head"

With the arrival of the PS4, we got a really lovely old man's head to showcase the processing power of it. This was of course a tech demo, and you won't see something quite like that during gameplay because the PS4 will be busy also rendering everything else and recording you masturbating to the graphics using the all-new 3D PS Eye and background-uploading it to their servers and your facebook with the all-new dedicated network chip. Here's this year's demo. So, let's go down console memory lane and look at old tech demos. Square Enix (Playstation 2) Old man at 1:30 Namco Girl (Playstation 2) Lookit dat hair. Two To Tango (Xbox) Dinosaur (Playstation) Shark/Flight (Nintendo "Ultra" 64) "Wow it looks so much better than Doom!" Shoichiro Irimajiri's Disembodied Head (Dreamcast) It's like that head from Mario 64, but somewhat creepier. That last one is weird as fuck.
All I have to say; [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/PsG6ilt.png[/img_thumb] Is there isn't much advancement. 2007 can compare to 2013/2014 tech demos? Oh well, at least games will have a bit more of a graphical side. But that doesn't matter, the size of the game matters. Yeah, you can have a huge graphical detailed game, but with the shittiest story ever, compiled with shit repetitive gameplay. Or you can have average graphics, but with an amazing story, and inventive gameplay. Too bad there isn't much of the latter, and plenty of the former.
All I have to say; [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/PsG6ilt.png[/img_thumb]
uhhhhh there's actually a massive difference between those two, the ps4 render looks significantly more realistic. watch the video and it becomes even more obvious.

I'm not saying about realism, or anything like that. I'm talking about how much 'advancement' that has apparently taken place in the industry, that has already been there for 4 years, if not more. Sure there are things in the nvidia tech demo that don't equate to the PS4 tech demo, because it's from 2007, and they were peaking their own GPU by that time. The PS4 is already out dated by the next generation of engines that are coming out, but that doesn't mean they'll automatically become better games. It will just be a horses dick, that is shined up, instead of a dull crusty one.

Expensive gaming PCs will always have better graphics, that's a known fact.
Looking back at those old tech demos, it makes me wonder how we thought those were amazing looking at all.
uhhhhh there's actually a massive difference between those two, the ps4 render looks significantly more realistic. watch the video and it becomes even more obvious.
IMO the Nvidia one looks much better. The only improvement is that the Quantic Dream head is animated.
Looking back at those old tech demos, it makes me wonder how we thought those were amazing looking at all.
When I first played Halo 2 (in 2007), I thought it was the most realistic game I'd ever seen. :v: Halo 3 and Mirror's Edge were even more amazing to me, until I became desensitized by all the other games I played.
I had that dinosaur PS1 tech demo on a demo disc, and I always thought that in the full game you could bite people's heads off and stuff so I kept searching for the full game but no retailer ever had it. "Hey do you have Dinosaur 3D?"
I still think the creation of meadia out of moving electrons is a wonderful thing, no matter how good/bad the graphics. And then I download an ebook that is 700kb and contains a whole world and I am amazed in an entirely different way.

[editline]24th February 2013[/editline] Also it's actually kind of amazing how useless tech demos are... it's not like people in games look as good as the bald dude from 2007 even now, 5 years later. With the possible exception of the recently released Crysis 3.
I'm really surprised the head didn't fall into uncanny valley (not for me at least). You honestly can't compare the nVidia head to it, a big part of it is the facial animations too.
I remember when MGS4 was shown off, and everyone was losing it due to how good it looked.

Circa 2004 http://www.fileplanet.com/118822/110000/fileinfo/Radeon-DX9-Animusic-Demo
Metroid Prime was the first time I experienced graphics that made me swoon. Anyone remember how amazing that game looked?

I have no idea why... but I remember having that dinosaur tech demo on disk. Does anyone know where they distributed this?
I got my PS1 demo disk with Crash Bandicoot 1.
Metroid Prime was the first time I experienced graphics that made me swoon. Anyone remember how amazing that game looked?
When I landed in the Overworld I spent a good 10 minutes just looking around the place.
Metroid Prime was the first time I experienced graphics that made me swoon. Anyone remember how amazing that game looked?
Metroid Prime still looks pretty good today in my opinion.
Then again the PS4 is pretty much already outdated running on 2007 hardware :v:
yeah, 2007 hardware. 8 GB GDDR5 and an 8-core CPU.
I remember when MGS4 was shown off, and everyone was losing it due to how good it looked.
Still does look pretty damn good.
You've all seen this before, but this still remains one of the most impressive tech demos for it's time I've ever seen.
I remember when half Life 2 used to have the best graphics and physics for it's time. back then, my old computer couldn't even run it at max settings. Today, almost every computer can run Half life 2 or any source engine games at max settings.
